Philip James Tapper

Philip James Tapper, affectionately known as Dr. P, Tappa, Uncle Philip, and General Smiley, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2025, in Laurel, Maryland at the age of 63.
Born in New York, Philip was the beloved son of Mae Elaine Tapper (née Johnson) and the late Alphonso Blake Tapper. As an infant, he moved with his parents to Kingston, Jamaica, where he spent his formative years.
Philip attended Belair Preparatory and High School in Mandeville and later completed his education at Campion College in Kingston. After graduation, he proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1979 to 1983, as a member of the 55th Wing. His service included roles in the Air Force Weather Agency, the National Airborne Operations Center, and the United States Strategic Command.
Following his military service, Philip worked with Island Couriers for many years follow by a decade-long career with Federal Express in Florida. He later moved to Maryland, where he played a pivotal role in the launch of the popular Caribbean restaurant, The Jerk Pit, an endeavor that gained recognition in The Washington Post. Philip eventually transitioned into the cable industry, where his entrepreneurial spirit led him to become the owner-operator of a cable installation business, which he ran for over ten years until his passing.
Known for his vibrant personality, Philip had a magnetic presence that made him the heart of any gathering. He loved lively conversations and was a spirited debater-especially on topics like football, racing, politics, and music. Generous, dependable, and always ready to help, he touched the lives of many with his kindness and charisma.
He is deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends.
Philip is survived by his mother, Mae Elaine Tapper; his son, Aleksander Tapper; his devoted partner, Yoyo; his sisters, Lesley-Anne "Beth" Tapper and Deborah Franz (née Tapper); his brother-in-law, Rawle Howard; his niece, Stephanie Tapper Franz; his nephews, Rawle Marley Tapper-Howard and Markus Tapper Franz; as well as many other relatives and dear friends.
A Celebration of Life will take place at the Church of St. Margaret, 167 Old Hope Road, 6 Kingston, Jamacia in December. Please check back for the date and time.
