Philip Trent Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Palmer Funeral Homes - Guisinger Chapel on Dec. 6, 2025.
Lt. Philip A. "Philly" Trent, 61, of South Bend, Indiana passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2025 at his home after a serious illness. He spent his last days enveloped in the love and care of family. Phil was born on June 9, 1964 to Alexander and Martha (Sobolewski) Trent. He completed grade school and junior high at The Stanley Clark School (Proud Iroquois!) and attended Saint Joseph High School in South Bend.

On April 15, 1987, Phil fulfilled his childhood ambition of becoming a police officer with the South Bend Police Department. He spent 33 years serving and protecting the City of South Bend. During his decorated career, Phil excelled in the patrol and detective divisions, rising through the ranks, and becoming an admirable leader. In 1993, he was selected to be part of the original Special Crimes Unit in St. Joseph County. As a homicide crime scene technician, Phil spent countless hours in the lab experimenting with different ways to collect and process evidence. His innovative work on photographing fingerprint evidence was published in a highly-respected international journal and led to new evidence techniques across the country. Fellow officers describe Phil as "extremely intelligent, diligent, and detailed," and a "compassionate and loyal" friend. In the latter part of his career, Capt. Trent acted as a spokesman for SBPD, keeping the public informed about safety and appearing regularly on local television news. He retired in 2021 as a dayshift supervisor in the patrol division, where his mentorship and guidance were deeply valued among his team.

In addition to numerous commendations for exemplary police work throughout his career, Phil was awarded Key to the City by South Bend Mayor James Mueller for Outstanding Service to the Community.

Phil was a beloved father to four children. He is survived by sons: Ryan (Samantha), Ian, and Spencer of Indianapolis; daughter Graciela of South Bend; granddaughter, Riley; companion Alicia; dog Loo; and countless friends and loved ones across the city and beyond.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents.

A lifelong sports fan, Philly loved watching football and hockey, especially the Chicago Blackhawks. He was a skilled fisherman and caught many muskies across the waters of Indiana, Michigan and Canada. A superb cook, Phil relished in making gourmet meals for his family, including his signature beef brisket, lasagna, polish sausage, and frittata. He was an award-winning BBQ rib maker and King of the Smoker.

Phil was also a talented craftsman with a knack for creating objects from scratch, including pipes, guitars, and mouldmade paper. He enjoyed reading great literary works and loved fine art and history, particularly the Civil War. Gettysburg was a treasured travel destination. An avid collector, Phil was an enthusiast of rare coins, knives, ball point pens, and pipes. In his retirement years, his focus shifted to collecting rocks, gems, and minerals - a favorite hobby he shared with little Gracie.

A memorial visitation will be held from 12 to 2 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14 at Palmer Funeral Home, the Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, IN 46614. A lunch reception will follow the service. (Location TBA). Palmer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
