Without colonel being in my life, i would've never been the person i am today. He taught me how to love, laugh, and be strong from the time i saw him first, to the time he set foot in gods kingdom. I will cherish the moments i had with my sweet grandfather for the rest of my life. We all love you and miss you. Rest easy Colonel, until we meet again. Save me a seat next to you in heaven.

Kacey Ellis Frost
September 26, 2019
All coaches, players and parents remember the one season that is special and makes you smile. Most would think it is a team that wins it all, but not necessarily. The year was 1997, my daughter Kacey Ellis Frost was a member of the team and I (Gary Ellis) was the assistant coach. We had the most amazing and memorable year together. When you have two top high school rivals in girls softball, what is the logical thing to do, you put some of the best players from Father Ryan High school and Brentwood High school teams together and go for the gold. At the time, the ASA 16 and under division was the premier league. Who do you pick as the head Coach? Phil Davidson, the head of Tennessee Umpires and long-time girls softball umpire and coach. I cant begin to list his level of experience.
What is the first objective? Win one of the qualifying tournaments for ASA. What is the logical tournament in our area? The ASA 16U qualifier in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I asked Phil on the way, will this be the first time a team from Nashville ever gets a break with the umpires from Chattanooga? The umpires were notorious for favoring Chattanooga teams. Phil said, Gary I have already been told that we will never win this tournament. But that didnt stop us. We were winning by 2 runs in the last inning of the championship game. There is always a time limit on every tournament game. We were already rain delayed and it was late Sunday night. The allotted time ran out for the game and the team, coaches and fans ran onto the field. The umpires said wait. Phil had a meeting at the plate. They changed the rules on the spot after Phil did what Phil did best, he pleaded his case. I have never seen Phil so dejected on the way back to the dugout. With head bowed, he said girls we have to play on. The girls all spoke up and said, dont worry Phil we will still beat them, and we did. You would not have believed the look on Phils face. I believe it was one of the proudest moments in his coaching career. I believe this victory fueled Phils passion for coaching.
We went on to play in Fresno, California. We lost the first two games and were out of the tournament. We decided to spend the rest of the time in Kings Canyon National Park, Sequoia National Park and San Franciscos downtown district. I dont believe the girls will ever forget this trip. What a season!
Throughout the season and many seasons to come, Phil never raised his voice, he never used bad language, his integrity was beyond reproach, and he loved the girls and the girls loved him. You could not ask for a better coach and person as a role model. Phil wanted to win but he also knew the importance of having fun and we had a lot of fun! Fathers and daughters that bond on the field create lifelong bonds off the field and we have Phil to thank for being part of our story. We will miss him dearly, we will continue to pray for his family, and we will continue to honor his story.
