Foremost I'd like to offer my deepest condolences on your loss and recount a story from my days on the UF football team.
I was a freshman walk-on quarterback at UF in the spring of 1989 who had the absolute pleasure to work with Coach Maggio that spring and fall. As a walk-on at the bottom of the depth chart, you spend a lot of time doing odd jobs in practice. In what must have been the first week of spring practice in that year, I was sent to work with Coach Maggio and the offensive line in a 3 on 3 drill, which consisted of 3 offensive linemen, vs 2 defensive linemen and a linebacker. All I had to do was take the snap and hand it to the running back. To say I was nervous would be an understatement. The first few plays went well, then I fumbled a snap, then another. "Quarterback, quarterback - if you fumble another snap I'm putting you at guard!" Coach yelled. As a 5-10, 180 lb guy the idea of lining up at guard vs a D1 defensive tackle was terrifying. Needless to say, I never fumbled another snap in any drill where he was involved!

I met Phillip in 7th grade Washington Jr. Hi. Tampa fl. To this day Phillip and I have always been friends. We still would dance together at all the school reunions. My heart hurts not only for him but for his wife Sylvia whom I've known since elementary school. I just read the 23rd psalm in his name. May God give peace to Sylvia and her children at this time.

My sincere sympathy and condolences to the Maggio family, what a great man and giant influence on my life, for sure. Coach Maggio was loved for his knowledge and patience for all he coached. His technique encouraged us to find and display our own strengths and limits. This world is a lot better place by his walk on this earth. Shine on you crazy diamond!

I am so sorry for your loss. What a special man Coach was to so many! Not only a great football coach but in High school, a teacher who took the time to get to know his students. And he passed me in Driver´s Ed although he shook his head a few times. Mrs Maggio, it was so nice of you both to come to Charlie´s funeral. I´m so glad we got the chance to catch up. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, PJ, Tracy and family. God Bless.

The photo sent with this post is of the seniors on the 1976 Plant High football team that won a then City of Tampa record of 12 consecutive games in a season and captured District, Conference, Regional and Sectional championships. Those achievements would not have been possible without Coach Maggio´s keen intellect, mastery of technique and unquestionable integrity. He was a perfect compliment to Coach Acosta and Coaches Fyfe, Sussman, Nelson and Rogers. Thank You Coach Maggio. With Love and Admiration,
Michael Barber
