Wilma Maggio

EAST CARBON -Wilma LaVerne Maggio passed away peacefully on Monday, February 16, 2026, at nearly 103 years old.

She was born in a small farmhouse in the early hours of February 25, 1923, near Burlington, Kansas, to Charles Albert and Daisy Bell Bowen Fry. She was educated in a one-room schoolhouse where she excelled in all subjects.

Wilma moved to Canyon City, Colorado at the age of 16 where she worked for an elderly woman as a personal aide. It was there that she met and married her love, Carl Maggio on July 29, 1940. They were married for 69 years. They then moved to a new town, Dragerton, Utah, in the spring of 1946 for Carl to work in the coal mines. Together, they also ran a furniture store, coal yard and one of the first service stations in the area. They raised five wonderful children together, as well.

As a young woman, Wilma joined the Catholic Church and was a devout member of Good Shepherd in East Carbon for the remainder of her life. She loved gardening, especially flowers. She took so much pride in raising her family and her flowers. She also loved needlework, reading and playing games, anything from board games and cards with family and friends, to trips to Nevada with her daughter Connie and friends to gamble. She also loved walking, fishing and hunting. She shot her last four point when she was nearly 80 years old. She was such a fun mom, grandma and neighbor. Wilma was known as Grandma Willie to not only her own grandchildren but to neighbor kids as well.

Wilma is survived by her children, Connie (Dwain) Driggs, Green River, WY, David (Shelly) Maggio, East Carbon, UT, Paul (Susan) Maggio, Cedar City, UT, Tammy (Allan) Wilson, Diamondville, WY; 17 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, 21 great-great-grandchildren; several special nieces and nephews; many friends and very special friends, Ricky and Carol Callor and family.

She is preceded in death by her parents; one sister; two brothers; in-laws; husband, Carl; son, Richard; daughter-in-law, Phyllis; great-grandson, Domoni; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral Mass, Saturday, February 21, 2026, 10:00 a.m., Good Shepherd Catholic Church (201 Center Street, East Carbon, UT 84520). Rosary service, Friday, February 20, 2026, 7:00 p.m., also at the church. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the Rosary on Friday, and one hour prior to the Mass on Saturday. Committal, Valley View Cemetery, Sunnyside, Utah.

Dear Maggio family. Condolences on the loss of your mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Wilma and her family were our neighbors when I was growing up in Dragerton. She was such a sweet lady. After my mother, Mary Helen Bell, moved to Wyoming she would often speak about Wilma and Carl and what great neighbors they were. RIP Wilma.
