Phillip Addison Shaughnessy, 96, affectionately known as "Pip" by his family and "Pat" among his coworkers, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2026, at WVU Medicine - Wheeling Hospital. He was born on May 23, 1929, in
Wheeling, West Virginia.
As a devoted employee of The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register for nearly 50 years, Phillip made an indelible mark on his profession. Throughout his extensive career, he enthusiastically served as a newspaper printer-a role that brought him immense pride and satisfaction. His commitment to his craft was unwavering, reflecting his deep passion for the work he cherished.
Phillip was a proud veteran of the United States Army, having honorably served his country with distinction. In his personal life, he was a man of steadfast faith, a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, where he worshiped alongside his beloved late wife, Mary Margaret "Peggy" Shaughnessy. Together, they were dedicated parishioners, deeply involved in their church community.
Beyond his dedication to his career and faith, Phillip was a respected member of the International Typographical Union (ITU), contributing to the legacy of his profession through his involvement and expertise.
Phillip was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Edith (Barr) Shaughnessy, his beloved wife, Peggy, and his sister, Jean May. He leaves behind cherished memories with his surviving family: his children, Colleen Kay (Charles) Polley, Kathleen Ann (Jeffrey) Allen, and Michael Shaughnessy. He was also the proud grandfather of Gabrielle (Joshua DelVillar) Allen, who held a special place in his heart.
Services to honor Phillip's life will commence on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, with visitation beginning at 5 PM, followed by the Rosary and Vigil Service at 7 PM at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger St. The following day, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael Catholic Church on Wednesday, March 11, at 12 PM, with interment and full military honors to follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Wheeling.
