PHILLIP WEBB
February 8, 1951 – July 20, 2024
Phillip Webb was a humorous, caring, and devoted family man who always put the needs of others ahead of his own. He was born on February 8, 1951, in Lambert, Mississippi, to Fannie Mae Battle, and Joseph Webb. He was one of 8 children, the oldest boy.
His parents moved from Mississippi to St. Paul Minnesota in 1952. He matriculated through the St. Paul school system (Maxfield Elementary, Marshall Junior High, Central High School). A 1969 graduate, Phillip was a three-sport athlete and played on six St. Paul City Conference Championship Teams for the Minutemen.
He earned All-city & All Metro Honors as a two-year offensive & defensive standout football player. He was a key contributor as a sophomore on Central's 1967 state basketball tournament team. Phillip continued to be a team leader his next two years and was named to the Conference All-City 1968 & 1969 basketball teams. He participated for three years as a varsity hurdler and high jumper for the track team. He was inducted into Central High School's Hall of Fame on September 29, 2009.
Phillip played linebacker on the 1970 Willmar Jr. College football team. He spent the next two years in the U.S. Army and became a Vietnam Veteran. Upon discharge from the Army, he walked on to the University of Minnesota basketball team and played one year of college basketball for the Gophers. He started a successful 22-year career in 1979 with the St. Paul Fire Department as a firefighter and retired in 2001.
Phillip was a man of God and a member of his brother Celester Webb's church, United Church of God in Christ.
He coached his son's AAU and rec center basketball teams in Brooklyn Park and Minneapolis Minnesota. Two of his children went on to play Division 1 college basketball thanks to his support and leadership. Phillip cared for his mother, visiting her daily in her later years. He was a loyal husband, dedicated father & grandfather, a loved son, and a pillar to the Black community.
He leaves to mourn his wife of 37 years, Annie Rachel Williams-Webb, three children: Miles Webb Sr. (Shelby), R Webb, Phillis Ann Webb, four grandchildren: Miles Jr., DeWayne, Amerie, & Phillip, and siblings: Shirley, Sandra, Walter (Marie), Joseph (Andrea), Celester (Felecia), Shavel, and Kelly (Debra).
Phillip was a man of unparalleled stature who will live forever in the hearts of all those who loved him so dearly.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10AM on Monday, August 5, 2024 with visitation one hour prior at Progressive Baptist Church, 1505 Burns Ave. St. Paul. Burial to follow the service at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Coach Webb was not only a basketball coach to me but a father figure growing up. Picking me up and dropping me off from our basketball tournaments on the weekends. Coach Webb used basketball as a tool to help mold us into young men of class and respect.
