Phillip Allen Whack was born February 14, 1950, the son of Harold and Lillian
Whack of Charleston, South Carolina.
Phillip was a 1968 graduate of Burke High School in Charleston, where he
excelled in science, civics and the music arts. His other academic credentials
include: Bachelor of Arts 1972, from Tuskegee University in Alabama; Master of
Public Administration 1974, from Penn State University in Pennsylvania.
After college Phillip began working in the Finance Division at the College of
Charleston. Following a brief time working in private industry, Phillip returned to
the public sector working in state government at the South Carolina Department of
Social Services until his retirement in 2016.
As a member of the United States Air National Guard Phillip trained at various
military installations around the country and served on active duty during
Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm which led to the American-led bombing
campaign against Iraq and the liberation of Kuwait circa 1990-1991.
Phillip believed deeply in church and community service. He was a devoted
member of Brookland Baptist Church, Northeast, led by the church's Senior Pastor,
The Reverend Charles B. Jackson, Sr. Fulfilling a lifelong appreciation of choral
music, Phillip sang with the Male Chorus at Brookland Baptist Church, and
previously with his high school and college choirs. Additionally, Phillip served as a
member of the South Carolina Memorial Park Commission in dedication to the
memory of those who fought and died in service to the nation.
Phillip was a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated since his
early college years at Tuskegee.
Phillip is survived by his devoted wife of two decades, Delores. His surviving
children include his sons, Tyrell, Phillip, Thomas and daughter, Ravyn, as well as
eight grands and one great grand. Surviving siblings include a sister, Donna, and
two brothers, Harold and Michael. Phillip's life will be cherished by a host of
extended family members, community and church associates and friends.
Throughout his life Phillip was most inspired by the Holy Bible Scripture of
(Psalm 27-14) which reads in part: "Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and
he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD."
