Phoebe Carey Obituary

Phoebe Hopkins Davis McCarthy Carey passed away peacefully in her home in Bronxville, New York after a courageous multi-year battle with cancer, surrounded by her family on December 6, 2025.

Born on March 29, 1989 at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, MD, Phoebe graduated from the Bryn Mawr School, having been a student there starting in Kindergarten. During her Middle and Upper School years, she played field hockey, squash, and lacrosse at the JV and Varsity levels. She was a tri-captain of the field hockey team her senior year when Bryn Mawr won the MIAA State Championship. She was also the Captain of the Varsity Squash Team and was appointed the Student President of the Athletic Department her senior year.

Phoebe had a beautiful singing voice and was a member of the prestigious Peabody Institute Children's Choir for 13 years.

An accomplished equestrian, Phoebe began fox hunting with her father Mike when she was 8 years old. They rode with the Greenspring Valley Hunt Club in Glyndon, Maryland.

Phoebe also grew up going to a family home in the Adirondack Region of Upper New York State. She loved to swim and hike and had climbed 32 of the 46 High Peak Mountains in the area in hopes of becoming an Adirondack "46er"

She also became an avid runner and successfully completed the New York, Boston and Dublin Marathons.

A standout athlete, Phoebe was heavily recruited to play field hockey in college. She went to Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine and was part of the team that won the first National Championship - in any sport - in the history of the College. The team went on to win a total of three National Titles during her four years there.

Upon graduation, Phoebe moved to New York City where she embarked on a very successful career in Finance and Consulting. She held management positions in Morgan Stanley's Private Wealth Division, Korn Ferry - an executive recruiting firm - PitchBook Data, and finally Graph Management.

Phoebe will be remembered for her courageous and heroic battle against cancer. She was diagnosed in her early thirties with a rare cancer disorder called Li Fraumeni, but her cancer journey began at age 10. She endured five operations, countless radiation and chemotherapy treatments for years and did it with grace and dignity. Her beautiful smile, her kind nature, her love of life, and her positive attitude are the hallmarks of her enduring legacy.

Phoebe is survived by her husband of nine years, Donald Carey Jr. of Bronxville, New York, and their children Charlotte Piper and Donald III.

Other family survivors include her parents Charlotte and Mike McCarthy; her brother Billy and his wife Sarah and their children Riley and Ellis; her brother Harrison and his wife Amanda. Additional survivors include her grandmother Beverly McCarthy of Baltimore and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She is predeceased by her beloved grandparents Bill McCarthy of Baltimore and Bill and Anne Miller of Bedford, New York.

A funeral celebration of life will be held at St Patrick's Cathedral in New York City at 11am on Saturday, December 13th. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in memory of Phoebe McCarthy Carey to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute to support Dr. David Reardon's cancer research and patient care (Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, PO Box 849168, Boston MA 02284) or the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Oncology Center (attn: Johns Hopkins University and Medicine, Kimmel Cancer Center, PO Box 49143, Baltimore, MD 21297).

To the Carey, McCarthy and Miller families,

I am so saddened to hear of Phoebe's passing. Don's tribute somehow came up on my LinkedIn and I recognized the name immediately. Though it's been ~25 years, I have thought of Phoebe many times over the years. We were friends at Wyonegonic camp in Maine, probably around age 10 - 11. We spent weeks chasing peepers (tiny frogs), learning canoe and archery. I remember pushing Phoebe into Lake as part of an award ritual - it was one of Wyonegonic's highest honors for one girl each summer.

I remember her as a great friend, and a grounding presence, even at that age. I am so sorry for your loss, and feel lucky that I had even a few summers with such a special girl.
