Anne Barker Obituary

Anne VandeGrift Barker, a retired Howard County nurse, died Thursday, June 5, 2025, surrounded by her loving family in Bryn Mawr, PA, from complications related to Alzheimer's disease. She was 84.

The daughter of Dr. William B. VandeGrift, a pathologist, and Dorothy B. VandeGrift, a nurse, Ms. Barker was born on February 10, 1941, in Baltimore, and lived on Ridgemede Road, attending nearby Calvert School as a young girl. She graduated from the Bryn Mawr School in 1959 and received her Bachelor's degree from Antioch College in 1974, after previously attending Wells College and Goucher College.

In 1962, Ms. Barker married George P. Barker, her high school sweetheart, who had attended the Gilman School. Ms. Barker and her husband, a lawyer, lived in Ft. Hood, Texas, New York City, and Boston, before settling in the "new city" of Columbia, MD, in 1972. The Barkers believed deeply in the city's goal of creating a community that welcomed people of diverse backgrounds.

In Columbia, the Barkers raised three children in the Wilde Lake neighborhood, and Ms. Barker was an active member of the community, contributing to Columbia's Festival of the Arts and other civic efforts. She also worked as a hospice caregiver. She loved walking and running around Wilde Lake, greeting neighbors and friends along the way.

In 1991, following in the footsteps of her mother, she enrolled at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, earning a Bachelor of Science in nursing. She worked as a floor nurse for the Johns Hopkins Hospital and then directed a public health study on the incidence of high blood pressure in Baltimore's Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood. She then returned to Howard County, where she served as the health director of Health Alliance, a clinic for low-income individuals with chronic diseases, retiring in 2006.

In 2018, following the death of Mr. Barker in 2016, Ms. Barker reconnected with the couple's long-time friend, Ralph Johanson, a retired lawyer in Washington, DC. Together, they built a loving partnership and relocated from Columbia, MD, to Bryn Mawr, PA, to be closer to family.

Ms. Barker will always be remembered for her infectious laugh and contagious sense of fun, deep care for others, love of dancing and merriment, and sincere support of causes and efforts to improve our world's wellbeing.

In addition to Mr. Johanson, Ms. Barker is survived by two daughters, Kate Barker Swindell (Chris) of Boston, MA, and Maggie Barker Taylor (Jesse) of Gladwyne, PA, and one son, Van Barker, of San Diego, CA; and six grandchildren – Sam and Will Swindell; Austin and Millie Barker; and Betsy and George Taylor.

Donations in Ms. Barker's honor may be made to the Community Foundation of Howard County and the Alzheimer's Association. Services are private.

Anne was a shining light that will never be extinguished. Her laugh, her kindness, her love embraced anyone who came within her circle. The pain of losing Anne is hard to accept, but she will live on through the many lives she touched.

Ann was a pure delight. Her presence reflected an infectious warmth, sense of humor and love of life. She and George were great friends of mine until I left Baltimore in 1965. We saw each other infrequently after that, but each time we did, it felt like we had just connected yesterday. I think a standup comedy act should have hired her to sit in the audience for her infectious laugh. The world needs more Annes.

Anne was here at Beaumont a short time , but her smile and entire manner made me connect to her and we had some great laughs .
Ralph and Anne were briskly walking on a very cold and windy day when they first moved here when I first met them. I was so looking forward to many more times together, but was glad that we had some dinners and a musical event before she passed away.
Best to her children and grandchildren and Ralph who will miss here so much.
May you hold her memories in your heart and keep them close to you as life carries on.

It was always a pleasure to be in the presence of Anne - engaging, curious, interesting - she always exuded a delightful energy. Her personal and colorful style (what a collection of amazing necklaces!) matched her sunny smile and disposition. I for one will surely miss her, especially on my Wilde Lake walks.

I'm deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Ms. Ann. She was like a second Mother to me. From the age of 5 until my adult years, I can greatly reminisce about the great times our families had. I enjoyed the lunches Ms. Ann and I had several years back. I'm so happy I had the chance to see her one last time before she moved to Bryn Mawr, PA. Ms. Ann will be greatly missed! Sending my Prayers, Condolences, and Love to the family.

Anne was my godmother and was always a wonderful part of my life. As I told her in the 80th birthday video tribute that her kids put together, she remains a big part of our lives in ways large and small. Kathy and I will be having chicken divan for dinner tonight, a recipe that she first gave to Mom and that has been a family favorite ever since. She made my Christmas stocking, and then added ones for Kathy and both our kids so that we have a complete and (mostly--mine's a lot older!) matching set. She and I had a wonderful afternoon at the Smithsonian a few years ago, looking at a narwhal exhibit put on by a colleague of mine. Characteristically, she was engaged, enthusiastic, eager to learn, and happy to traipse the halls of the museum. I can hear her laugh now, an echo from throughout my childhood, any time I was with her, as well as her smile lighting everything up and her genuine interest in whatever I was up to at the time. I am very lucky to have been in her life and to have had her in mine. I hope that you, too, have many happy memories amid the tears of losing her. Her life deserves a rousing celebration.
