Phyllis Snelgrove Calamas, 89, of Newberry, South Carolina, left to be with her Lord Jesus Christ early Tuesday morning, July 15, 2025.
She was born November 24th, 1935 in Saluda County to Cloy Dewitt Snelgrove and Sara Omega Fulmer. Early in her childhood, the family moved to Sumter County where she was a 1953 graduate of Edmunds High School. Phyllis married David L Cartner and had three children. She later married DeLeon E Calamas and had one child.
Phyllis was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in West Columbia, South Carolina for 53 years.
She was an accountant for over 60 years.
For 53 years she was a member in good standing of Beta Sigma Phi, an International Women's sorority and received the Alpha Omega Award.
Phyllis enjoyed traveling, listening to and playing classical music, ancestry, and floral design. Her hobbies included sewing, knitting, and reading.
Phyllis is survived by her siblings, Margaret Snelgrove Heckle and Cloy Dewitt Snelgrove Jr (Kit), children Richard David Cartner (Teresa), Randy Lee Cartner (Joyce), Rhonda Cartner Areheart (Steven), and Robbin Calamas Goforth (Donald), grandchildren Randall L Cartner, Jason L Areheart, Kenneth D Cartner, Richard L Cartner, Kaleah C Sears, Sarah A Curtis, Robert L Cartner, Preston R Goforth, Andrew D Goforth, and many great and great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1500 Sunset Blvd in West Columbia, South Carolina on Sunday, July 20, at 2:00pm, with visitation preceding at 1:00pm. Pastor Joanna Gragg will be officiating. Woodridge Memorial Park & Funeral Home is assisting the family.
