Phyllis Ruth (LaJuenesse) Champion, 89 years old of Oxford, Michigan passed away peacefully at Corewell Butterworth Hospital with family by her side on Friday, Nov. 29, 2024. Phyllis was born on Aug. 19, 1935, in Marquette, Michigan to Louis and Alice (Larson) LaJuenesse.
Phyllis attended Marquette High School where she was active in the vocal groups. Phyllis graduated high school in 1953 when she also married the love of her life, Robert "Bob" David Champion, in Marquette, Michigan on April 15, 1953. Together, they raised three sons: Robert Joseph, David Scott, and Steven Jon.
Phyllis was a lifelong caretaker and partner to Bob during their 71 years of marriage and was known for her kind, thoughtful and unselfish demeanor.
She was a longtime member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Marquette, and her faith and spirituality were central to her life outlook. She enjoyed reading, wrote in a journal, and often found and shared uplifting and motivational quotes or excerpts with her friends and family, who she adored. Those same journals are shared today and bring family joy!
Phyllis was always put together and had an appreciation for fancy things, but rarely drew attention to herself. She loved singing, shopping -- especially for shoes and hats -- and had an eye for unique knick-knacks and trinkets, which she collected and displayed on walls and shelves in her home.
Most of all, she had a deep love for children and took pride in spoiling her grandkids with sweets and presents. Chocolate cake for breakfast was ok. Phyllis (Grandma) would say "your stomach doesn't know the time of day." She often befriended families with young kids in her later years, developing a reputation in the neighborhood as "everyone's grandma."
Survivors include two sons, Dave (Tina) Champion and Steven (Lisa) Champion; 6 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband (by 25 days) and her oldest son, Robert.
Per Phyllis' wishes, cremation has taken place, and no formal services will be held.
The family would like to thank the staff of Corewell Butterworth Hospital and Hospice for their unwavering care. Many thanks also go out to Michigan Cremation and Funeral Care for the flawless and compassionate end of life arrangements.
