Phyllis attended District #61 in Platte County through the eighth grade before continuing her education at Newman Grove High School, where she graduated with the class of 1953. After high school, she taught at District #37 in Boone County.

On August 8, 1958, Phyllis was united in marriage to Lonnie R. Cumming

at Trinity Lutheran Church in Newman Grove. The couple farmed together, first in Boone County from 1958 to 1970, and later in Platte County from 1970 to 1996. In 1996, they retired from living on the farm and moved into St. Edward, where Phyllis resided until her passing in 2025. Aid, LWML, also served as a Sunday School teacher and treasurer, as well as donating time to many community organizations in the area.
