Phyllis Elizabeth Driggus departed this life peacefully on March 8, 2025 comforted by her family at her bedside. She was born on September 21, 1932 in Goldsboro, Maryland to the late Eleanor (Saulsbury) and Frederick Browne, Sr.
As a lifelong resident of Camden-Wyoming, Phyllis, also affectionately known as "Aunt Spicy", was a dedicated employee of 30 years as a machine operator at Playtex in Dover. Prior to working at Playtex, she worked for Howard Johnson in Dover where she wore many hats as a waitress and eventually a cook.
Phyllis was known for her culinary skills, and stayed in the kitchen cooking and baking, especially for an event at the church. Phyllis loved to cook, and her favorite pastime was selling dinners at the Bibleway Church Hall for the Pastoral Aide. Phyllis was known for the big orders from Kraft and Playtex, and would sell out of her yams, macaroni and cheese, and peach cobbler. She served as a leader of the Sunday School and church choir. Phyllis helped with organizing community events, such as Summer Youth lunch programs, chaperoned Vacation Bible School bus trips, and assisted in local church youth programs which she recruited many family members to assist her.
In the early 1980's, Phyllis gave her life to the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was a member in good standing of Bibleway Temple Institutional COGIC, and loved to be of service to her church family. She loved the Lord and quoted scriptures to everyone as she sang a hymn to get her point across. She was always ready for conversation about the Lord. She would tell all her grandkids and anyone who would listen how they needed to get ready for Jesus as she sipped her ginger ale.
Phyllis had a special hobby of growing flowers, especially her prized peonies and spearmint in her garden. Phyllis loved to be out in the stores shopping. She had an eye for fashion and loved animal prints. Her favorite story was one that was never forgotten. It was of her and her beloved James wooing her as he rowed a little boat across the pond.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 62 years, James Driggus, Sr.; a son, James E. Driggus; daughters, Joyce M. Green and Jeana Bell; three brothers: Joseph Browne, Frederick Browne, Jr., and Ennis (Buster) Browne; and two sisters, Doris Burris and Ida Greene.
Phyllis is survived by a daughter, Jacklyn Driggus; four sisters: Iva Bowers (Louis, Sr.), Carolyn Jones, Denise White, and Joanne Wright; one brother, Clifton Browne; six in laws, Florence Browne, Harriet Gilmore, Jean Driggus, Mildred Browne, Charlotte Tull, and Obrie Greene; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great grandchildren; and a "special" daughter Dorothy Bryant; special nieces, Angel Brittingham and Mary Ann Burris; special friends Lorraine Harris, Carolyn Miller, and Orlando Wright; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
A funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, March 21, 2025 at Bible Way Temple Church of God in Christ, 56 S. Kirkwood Street, Dover, DE 19904 where there will be a viewing from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. Friday. Burial will follow in Sharon Hills Memorial Park.
