She was born on August 6, 1935, in Murphysboro, IL, to Kenneth and Margaina (Fisher) Gale. She married Reynold Joe Ellis on October 23, 1954 in Ava, IL. He passed away on February 8, 2015.
Surviving are her children, Larry Ellis of Secor, IL, Donna (Ben) Shirley of Germantown Hills, IL, and Angela Ellis of Washington, IL; son-in-law, Ben Short of Homasassa, FL; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; and siblings, Gordon (Billie) Gale of Ava, IL, Janet Santos of Kyle, TX, and Allen Gale of Murphysboro, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Pamela Short, two sisters, and one brother.
Phyllis was a kind-hearted and family-oriented daughter, sister, mother and grandmother to the many family members whose lives were touched by her love in her ninety years. At family events, Phyllis could be seen with people of all ages, beaming with joy as she laughed, swapped stories, and kept up to date on the details of her family's lives.
Phyllis was a devoted member of Saint Mary of Lourdes Catholic Church. Her faith was an important part of her life and guided the kindness and care she showed to those around her. She found joy in her dog Abby, quilting, tending her flower garden, and spending time with her family. Phyllis will be remembered most for her sweet and gentle nature and the warmth she shared with everyone who knew her.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, March 20, 2026 at St. Mary of Lourdes Catholic Church with Father Eric Bolek officiating.
