Phyllis Crews Ewers, 84, of Madison Heights, VA, passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at her daughter's home. She was the wife of the late John Wyndol Ewers, Sr.
Born in Lynchburg, VA, on March 16, 1941, she was the daughter of the late James Edward Crews and Isabel Roark Crews. Phyllis was a member of Madison Heights Christian Church. Phyllis was the first female supervisor for Archer Creek Foundry and was the owner and operator of Nannies Day Care for 27 years.
Phyllis was more commonly known as Nanny to many Amherst County residents as she and Papa became an extra set of grandparents to the many children they kept in their home over the years. She remembered every birthday, special occasion and attended every sporting event she could.
Phyllis loved to cook and share the gift of hospitality by providing meals for those in need especially during the holidays. Phyllis would bless friends in the community with crocheted blankets to brighten their day. As much as she loved to bless her community, she was a big fan of watching Heartland and on the weekends you could find her "scooter pootin" with her family whether going to a yard sale or shopping.
She is survived by three children, Theresa Floyd, John Ewers Jr. and wife, Joy, and James Ewers and wife, Candy; four grandchildren, Jennifer Salonia (Daniel), Kristie Thilking and husband, Bryan, Jake Ewers and wife, Marielle, and John Ewers and wife, Mae; eleven great-grandchildren, Drake Smith, Calyse Smith, Celena Smith, Denim Smith, Phoebe Estipular, Zoey Ewers, Sawyer Thilking, Oliver Thilking, Benjamin Thilking, Eleanor Thilking, and Evelyn Ewers; 4 step grandchildren and 4 step great grandchildren; three sisters, Jean Thorpe, Dot Freeman, Betty Carwile; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Duffield and JoAnne Woody.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am, Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Hebron Baptist Church, officiated by Reverend Tom Walker. Burial will follow at Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery.
