Phyllis was born in Harlan, Iowa to Elmer and Stella Heilesen. She is proceeded in death by her parents, sister Verla Greenwalt and daughter Diane Emerson. She is survived by her adored children, Linda Sturm (Harold), Richard Hyde (Patty) and Cheryl Hyde, 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and her beloved nephews.
The family moved to Council Bluffs, IA when Phyllis was 12 years old. She graduated from Abraham Lincoln High in 1947. Phyllis married Herbert Hyde in 1950 and they divorced in 1970. She always worked a full time job and raised her children as a single mother. If you met Phyllis you loved her, she was kind to everyone. She was smart, funny, loved to laugh and had a special twinkle in her eyes.
Phyllis worked many years for IA Dept of Human Services as a social worker and then promoted to district supervisor. After she retired from the super visor job, she worked at a medical clinic checking in patients and other clerical duties. Phyllis always wanted to keep busy and didn't fully retire until she was in her 70's.
Phyllis was very active all throughout her life. She enjoyed roller skating, playing golf, bike riding, gardening and other activities. She even participated in Ragbri across Iowa in her 60's. Phyllis must have loved Iowa, because she never wandered too far away....usually vacationing to Colorado or South Dakota.
Phyllis was an excellent cook too. When she moved to her house on Ave A, she would be sure to have a Sunday dinner ready for the family and all would usually show up. As a Grandma, she loved taking each one of her grandchildren to lunch and shopping for their birthdays.
Phyllis will be brought back home and laid to rest on October 28, 2024 in Harlan, Iowa beside her parents and sister. Phyllis will always be remembered as a one of a kind Mother, Grandmother, aunt, cousin, friend and life of the party.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Monday, October 28, 2024.
