Phyllis Johnson, 95, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend to many, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2025, in Greenfield, Indiana, at the age of 95. Born on September 22, 1929, in Indianapolis, Phyllis dedicated her life to her family and community, embodying strength, love, and a caring spirit that touched the lives of all who knew her.
Phyllis’s professional journey included many years working on the assembly line for General Electric (GE), where her strong work ethic and dedication set an inspiring example for her colleagues. Alongside her career, she was a proud mother of seven children, taking immense pride in their achievements and the lives they created.
At the young age of 16, Phyllis married her devoted husband, William Johnson, with whom she shared 66 wonderful years of marriage until his passing. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership, serving as a foundation for the family they built together. Phyllis is predeceased by her husband, William, as well as her parents, John and Leona Heffner, and her sons, Gary and Kenneth Johnson.
She is survived by her children: Robert (Linda) Johnson, Pamela Newman, Terry Johnson, Doug (Maggie) Johnson, and Todd (Debbie) Johnson; her brother, John Tolliver; and her daughter-in-law, Jean Johnson. Phyllis leaves behind a legacy of love through her 14 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren, each of whom carries a piece of her heart.
Phyllis was known for her culinary talents, especially her homemade biscuits and gravy. She enjoyed spending time at home, surrounded by her family and her beloved dogs, often filling the air with the sounds of country and gospel music. An enthusiastic bingo player, Phyllis relished the joy of friendly competition among friends. She also liked spending Sunday nights at The Barn, enjoying country music with her friends.
A visitation will take place on August 25, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM. Both events will be held at Washington Park East, located at 10722 E Washington St. in Indianapolis, IN 46229.
The family invites all whose lives were touched by Phyllis to join them in celebrating her life and the wonderful memories they created together. She will be remembered for her unwavering faith and the profound love she shared with her family and friends.
