Phyllis Mary (Burkott) Koons, 75, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 1, 2026, with her daughters by her side. She was born in Westfield to the late Henry and Wanda (Yefko) Burkott.

Phyllis attended Gateway High School and graduated in 1968 went on to pursue a career as a hairdresser, a profession she enjoyed for many years. She later worked at Westfield State University in the cafeteria, where she was known for her dedication and friendly presence.

Phyllis was quite an artist and loved to draw outdoor scenes which family members are fortunate to have hanging on their walls. Along with this talent, she played clarinet for many years beginning at an early age -duets with Theresa on the trumpet were a favorite past time. In addition, her musical expertise included playing the glockenspiel in the Whip City Drum Corps for several years.

Phyllis was always there when a family member or friend needed anything. She loved cooking and fond memories of her continuously basting that Thanksgiving turkey come to mind.

She was predeceased by the love of her life, Peter Hayden. She is survived by her beloved children, Angela (Eugene) Sanctuary of Granville, Kimberly Koons of Westfield, and Matt (Karen) Koons of Feeding Hills and her cherished grandchildren, Elleigh, Hunter, Kaleigh, Forrest, Betty, Maeby, and Eddard. She also leaves her sister Theresa (Henry) Molesky of Lutz, Florida along with nieces Samantha Lane and Jennifer Bailey both of Plant City, Florida and their families.
