Phyllis Ann Labat, age 83, of Marshall, Minnesota, died on Monday, March 31, 2025, at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Memorial Mass is 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall, Minnesota. Interment will be at the Calvary Cemetery in Marshall, Minnesota, followed by a reception back at Carlin Hall. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, also at the church.
Phyllis Ann (Berends) Labat was born on May 26, 1941, at her home in Glenwood City, Wisconsin, to parents Theodore and Evelyn (Boerboom) Berends. She grew up in the Ghent and Marshall area and attended St. Eloi Grade school in Ghent. Phyllis was baptized, received her first communion, and was confirmed in the Catholic Faith. After her family moved to Minnesota, she graduated from Central Catholic High School in Marshall, Minnesota, in 1959.
On October 6, 1962, Phyllis married her high school sweetheart, Donald Labat at St. Eloi Catholic Church in Ghent. Phyllis was employed as an operator and repair clerk at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for 17 years. Then she was employed at Western Human Development Center for 24 years before retiring in 2001.
Phyllis was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Marshall. She spent her retirement years in a log home on Floodwood Lake near Hibbing, MN before moving to Sun City, Arizona, in 2005. In 2010 she became a “snowbird” spending the summers in Green Valley, Minnesota. In 2019, they sold their home in Sun City and returned to live in Marshall. Her enjoyments in life included camping, sewing, knitting, crocheting and cross stitching. Her most enjoyable times were spending time with kids, grandchildren, the Labat family and many friends.
Phyllis Labat died on March 31, 2025, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the age of 83 years, 10 months, and 5 days. Blessed be her eternal memory.
Phyllis is survived by her 2 sons, Jeffry (and Jessica) Labat and their children, Jonathon, and Enrique of San Diego, CA, Scott (and Kim) Labat and their children Megan and Hannah of Crystal, MN; sister, Lois (and Robert) Jacob; brothers, Ernest (and Mary Jane), Wally (and Olivia); many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Phyllis is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Labat; son, Curtis Labat; parents, Theodore and Evelyn Berends; and special family members, Randy Picht, Howard Serreyn, Janet Labat, Carol Labat, Tom Labat, Judy Labat, Gary Hoflock, and Gayle “Kookie” Berends.
