Phyllis Katrina Raymond (Gainey)
October 4, 1941 - February 18, 2026
84 years old
Springfield, LouisianaPhyllis Katrina Raymond, age 84, of
Springfield, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2026, in her home.
She was born on October 4, 1941 in
Springfield, Louisiana to Lorrin Lindsey Gainey, Sr. and Lula Mae Richardson.
Phyllis grew up in
Springfield, Louisiana and attended Springfield High School. Her childhood was spent on her family's farm that ultimately became the home where she raised her own children. As a child, she enjoyed taking care of her siblings and caring for the family's farmhouse. Her mother and father instilled a love for the Lord in her heart as a young girl that carried through generations.
She became an LPN through the Hammond Trade School and worked as a nurse at Hammond State School before transitioning to in-home caretaking for elderly patients. Phyllis met her husband Michael Raymond in New Orleans and they wed in 1959 when she was 18. They were married for 16 years before Michael Raymond passed away in 1975. By 34 years old, Phyllis was a single mother of 5 children and 2 step-children. She was a hardworking woman, often working night and day shifts back-to-back to provide for her family. Phyllis was incredibly resourceful, learning how to make due with what she could, getting creative in the kitchen, and teaching her children how to be thankful and content with whatever the Lord provided. As a mother, her priority was to make sure her children were raised in the knowledge and instruction of the Lord, and she did that very well.
Once she became a grandmother, her priority became caring for them. Throughout her life, she lived with multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren for extended periods of time to love and care for them. Through this endeavor of love she spent time in California, Arizona, and Tennessee, even going as far as Germany. She would've done anything for the people she loved. She was the epitome of a servant.
Phyllis enjoyed going on cruises with her daughter, Barbara Ann, whom she lived with for the last 15 years of her life. She loved playing card games, most notably– Canasta, solving sudoku puzzles, and sipping on a sweet, cold cup of coffee surrounded by friends and family whenever she had the chance.
Phyllis remained sharp as a tack, even in her final years. She had a vibrant sense of humor, an incredible memory, and a beautiful singing voice. She would use all of these things to bring joy to family gatherings and enrich the lives of those around her.
Her faith was rooted in Jesus Christ. She was a faithful member of Blood River Church of God throughout the majority of her life. Her parents were instrumental in the building of this church, where Phyllis would enjoy years of ministry, vacation bible schools, camps, and fellowship, as well as where she would send her children through their younger years. Her and her family were always part of the Louisiana Summer Camps through Blood River and the Church of God denomination. Phyllis also served as a delegate for Blood River Church to the general conference. In the last few years of her life, she was a devoted member of an online Bible study where she regularly led others in prayer, scripture reading, and communion.
Her very last night on earth was spent logged on to her online Bible study where she partook in communion and read the closing verses to other believers in the faith. Perhaps some of Phyllis' last words were Revelation 1:5-8. "and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father-to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen."
Her legacy of faith continued to her children and grandchildren, and six of them went on to become ordained ministers–John Raymond; Jim Raymond; Mary Branum Erickson; Lorrin Raymond; Kenny Weaver, and Benjamin Raymond. Undoubtedly, her favorite things include: God's Holy Bible; Hymns; Worshipping the Lord by herself or with other believers in person or online, and her family.
Phyllis was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend. She would want to be remembered for being a faithful follower of Jesus Christ who prayed without ceasing and was looking forward to her eternal home in God's kingdom.
She is survived by her brother, Edgar James Gainey (Rachael).
