Phyllis Jean Travis, age 78, of Winterset, Iowa, passed away on January 27, 2026, at Madison County Health Systems in Winterset.
Phyllis was born on April 15, 1947, in Paducah, Kentucky, the daughter of George Willard and Velda Gray (Milam) Torian. She attended high school in Ferndale, Michigan, graduating in 1965. Following graduation, she became a licensed beautician and later entered the workforce as a legal secretary, a position she held for more than 30 years before retiring in 2013.
After retirement,She was a member of the Red Hat Society, and worked part time at the library in New Virginia, Iowa.. Through the years, Phyllis and her family owned an acreage in Michigan, where she enjoyed frequent visits and appreciated the peaceful scenery it provided. She was an avid crocheter and lovingly made blankets for her grandchildren. Phyllis enjoyed watching movies, especially the television series Longmire, and had a passion for traveling, including numerous cruises and trips abroad. She loved dogs of all kinds and owned several throughout her life. She also greatly enjoyed country music and was a devoted Elvis fan. Phyllis also loved to read and would read almost daily.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers, James (Butch) and Bennie Torian.
She is survived by her children, Gary (Melanie) Travis and Kim (Cory) Mitchell; grandchildren, Nicole (Tanner) Speer, Hailey Travis, Mary Mitchell, and Sam Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Rowan, Koe, and Layla; and her sister, Nancy Goodman.
Cremation has taken place, and interment will be held in the spring in Paducah, Kentucky.
