Dr. Pierre Nabil Azzam, 45, passed away on February 13, 2026 in
Houston, Texas after a devastating diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease only one month earlier. We take comfort in knowing that this brilliant and caring person accomplished so much in his short time here and that he is now safely in God's hands.
Pierre was born on September 5, 1980 in
Houston, Texas to Eva and Nabil Azzam. His younger brother and one of his closest lifelong friends, Patrick, completed the family when he was born six years later. Pierre was an exceptionally bright and curious individual. He excelled at reading and writing, even before entering kindergarten. His aptitude was so voracious that at the young age of 15, he left MacArthur High School in Aldine to enroll at the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Sciences (TAMS) at the University of North Texas where, in the span of two years, he completed not only the last two years of high school but also the first two years of college.
In 1998, he was accepted into Rice University and double majored in Psychology and Biology. His mother worked as an administrator in the Psychology Department, so they joyfully continued to see each other often. Pierre completed an honors thesis on visual event-related potential (later published) and graduated with the highest honors. The psychology faculty remember him often setting the curve, a fact his classmates might not so fondly recall. Pierre also completed his premedical requirements and after graduating from Rice in 2001, he was accepted into the Baylor College of Medicine and graduated in 2005. He chose to pursue Psychiatry and headed to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) for a four-year residency at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC), where he was a beloved chief resident. He followed this up with a two-year clinical Harvard University fellowship in Consultation-Liaison (CL) Psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).
Pierre returned to UPMC where he was hired as an Assistant Professor and the Associate Director of Residency Training for Psychiatry. During this time, he played a significant role in enhancing educational programming, maintaining a robust clinical and administrative schedule, publishing more than 40 research articles, and creating a fellowship program in CL Psychiatry. Perhaps most importantly, he influenced many budding psychiatrists to be similarly astute, genuine, and caring clinician-educators. After getting tenure and earning promotion to Associate Professor in 2017, he remained at UPMC for several more years and began to grow a particular interest in men's mental health – specifically, how depression, anxiety, and trauma-based disorders show up in men; how traditional ideologies of manhood may fuel stigma and barriers to mental wellness; and how to improve approachability and access to mental health services for men at times of transition, like early fatherhood.
Being a gender equity advocate, Pierre realized there were far too few resources that specifically spoke to men's issues. In 2019, he gained his professional certification as a coach through programs at Duquesne University and ICF South Florida, and gained his MBA in an immersive program on mindfulness at New York University. He then changed course and set to work. In 2019, he founded Braver Man Coaching in
West Palm Beach, FL, where he coached men to build self-awareness, confidence, and the resolve to face life's challenges head-on. Additionally, in 2020, he founded Coaching for Docs and began coaching physicians, across specialties and levels of experience, to build a life of ultimate freedom and personal fulfillment. Over the last seven years, he excelled in creating a space for men to be honest and vulnerable when they felt like they were quietly unraveling. His clientele has consistently expressed gratitude for the way in which Pierre has equipped them with clarity and courage to live deeply meaningful lives, and they are heartbroken that he is no longer there to coach them.
Pierre will be most sorely missed by his extremely loving parents, brother, aunts, uncles, cousins (many of whom were so instrumental in his care the last few weeks), and his many other beloved family and friends. We will miss this wonderful human being who was so kind and generous. We will also miss trademark Pierre interactions – his contagious laughter, sharing a glass of his favorite Prosecco while talking about life, listening to him talk emphatically about Gaza and Palestine, getting schooled on gourmet (versus "pedestrian") food, listening to him delight in psychiatry, and hearing his earnest discussions about the troubling issues that face men in our society. His niece and nephews - Juliet, Noah, and Mason - will particularly miss their loving, goofy uncle who adored them endlessly. And we will all miss his perfect gift-giving ability, a reflection of his willingness to genuinely care and understand the essence of others.
We remain so fortunate to have had 45 years with this wonderful light. We take comfort in knowing Pierre will join his maternal grandparents (Bandaly and Claire), his paternal grandparents (Boutros and Labibe), and his uncles (Raymond, Fouad, and Bassem).
We welcome you to celebrate Pierre with us. There will be a closed-casket visitation on Thursday (19th of February) from 5-7 p.m. at Klein Funeral Home – Cy Fair Northwest, 9719 Wortham Blvd,
