Obituary published on Legacy.com by Boulevard Funeral Home and Cremation Service on Feb. 11, 2026.
Pieter van Westervelt of Northvale, formerly of New Milford, was 66 years old when he passed away peacefully Monday, February 9, 2026, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Pieter was the son of the late David and Gloria van Westervelt. He is survived by his loving children- daughter Kristin Del Greco and her husband Joseph Jr., son David van Westervelt and his wife Samantha, and daughter Samantha van Westervelt. Pieter was the devoted brother of Keith van Westervelt. He was predeceased by his brother Brian van Westervelt and survived by his sister-in-law, Kim van Westervelt. Pieter is the cherished Opa of grandchildren Lucas, Everleigh, Dominick, and Hunter. He was the faithful companion of his dog Rocky. He is also survived by several nieces.
Pieter was a deeply devoted family man who treasured time spent with his children and grandchildren. He was a lifelong lover of animals, especially the many dogs who were fortunate to be part of his life. His compassion and generosity were evident in both his personal life and his professional career. Pieter was known as a straight shooter-honest, thoughtful, and unafraid to speak his mind-always balanced with humor, kindness, and genuine care for others. Above all, he was a loyal friend. His guidance, laughter, and steady presence will be deeply missed.
A respected leader within the green industry, Pieter was the owner of Premium Aquascapes in Bergenfield. He left a lasting mark on his industry, his professional association, and in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him. Pieter served as a past Board Member of the New Jersey Landscape Contractors Association, where he played a vital role in shaping the values his association stands on to this day. He was the recipient of the NJLCA's Legislative Champion Award for creating the Association's Code of Ethics-an enduring legacy that continues to guide its members today and reflects Pieter's integrity, fairness, and commitment to doing what is right. Most recently, Pieter was honored with a Landscape Achievement Award of Excellence, a fitting recognition of his talent, dedication, and unwavering commitment to excellence in his profession.
Outside of his work, Pieter took great pride in his 1969 red Pontiac GTO, a reflection of his personality: classic, bold, and meticulously cared for.
He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all whose lives he touched.
