Dr. Pouran "Pat" Zekavat

Dr. Pouran "Pat" Zekavat, 91, of Moorestown, NJ, passed away, surrounded by her loving family, on December 14, 2025. Pouran was preceded in death by her husband Hassan. She is survived by her children, Kenneth Zekavat (Suzanne) and Susan Nourbakhsh (Mohsen), and her adored grandchildren: Dara, Sasha, Sophie and Anya.

Pouran, born in Mashhad, Iran in 1934, was the youngest of five siblings. Her father was a journalist and entrepreneur, owning a private sugar manufacturing business, and her mother was a teacher. Her parents always emphasized the importance of education and family. Pouran was one of only two women who graduated from Mashhad Medical School in 1960. Pouran and Hassan met and married while in medical school.

Pouran and Hassan came to Philadelphia to attend their residencies at the Hahnemann University Hospital. Pouran broke barriers as the first woman accepted into the radiology residency at Hahnemann. Upon completing her residency, she sub-specialized in G.I. radiology at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate Hospital and had a sub-specialty in ultrasound at Thomas Jefferson Hospital. For over 25 years, she worked as a radiologist at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, where she also taught medical students and radiology residents.

Her husband Hassan was an orthopedic surgeon and was the first to perform a total hip replacement at Kessler Memorial Hospital in Hammonton, NJ. He practiced for over 40 years from his Moorestown office, where Pouran joined him weekly to help read his radiology films after work.

Pouran and Hassan loved to travel and enjoyed every summer at the Jersey shore with family and friends. After retiring, Pouran found a passion for cooking, especially Persian food. Pouran was very social, had friends in many places, and participated in events big and small. She was an avid walker and enjoyed her daily exercise classes. She liked to share current events and medical news with others; she was a giver and had an affinity for helping others.

Pouran's greatest pleasure in life was spending time with her four grandchildren. She will be remembered for her fierce loyalty, strength, warmth and love.

A private service will be held for the family.
