Roy Leon "R.L." Smart, age 80, of
Piggott, Arkansas, formerly of Rockford, Illinois, passed away on March 24, 2026, at Regional One Health in Memphis, Tennessee.
He was born on October 1, 1945, in
Piggott, Arkansas, to the late Richard and Hattie Mae (Rickman) Smart.
R.L. was united in marriage to Beverly Rae Moser on February 16, 1974. They shared many years together until her passing in 2021.
R.L. spent many years working at National Lock, Elco Industries, where he became known for his strong work ethic, dependability, and steady character. He was a man who believed in honest labor and took pride in providing for his family through diligence and perseverance.
Beyond his work, R.L. was marked by a quiet and consistent generosity. He gave freely of himself, both in time and in care for others. He donated 18 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross over the years-a testimony to his desire to serve and help those in need. In his everyday life, he looked for simple ways to care for others, often mowing yards for widows and those unable to do so themselves, asking little or nothing in return. These quiet acts of kindness reflected the kind of man he was-faithful, humble, and considerate of others.
R.L. enjoyed time with family and friends, especially playing card games together. He also loved to sing and faithfully used his gifts in the life of the church, serving as Choir Director at Rockford United General Baptist Church. Later, he attended Lincolnwood Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Donald Smart, Mildred Smart, Dean Smart, Wanda Penney, and Terry Smart.
He is survived by his brother, Rex Smart and wife Brenda; his sister, Doronda Sue McCullough; three sisters-in-law, Donna Martin and husband Leo, Audrey Moser, and Marsha Watkins and husband Terry; brother-in-law, Dan Moser, Jr.; nieces and nephews: Scotty Penney, Barry Penney and wife Tammy, Michelle Smart, Shannon Smart and wife Farrah, Rexanna Lea and husband George, Shane Smart and wife Brandy, Brandon Smart and wife Kortney, and Zach Smart; along with many great and great-great nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends who will cherish his memory.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 27, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home in
Piggott, Arkansas, with Charles Richardson officiating and Boyce Cate assisting. Burial will follow at Piggott Cemetery.
