Rachel Joyce Dowdy Hamlett, 87, of Forest, Virginia, entered into her Savior’s arms on December 2, 2025. She passed peacefully at her home with the family she treasured so dearly by her side.

Rachel was born in Nathalie, VA, on September 26, 1938, to the late Joseph Preston Dowdy Sr. and Edith Cage Dowdy. Rachel is survived by her daughter, Donna Smith of Rustburg, and her son, Edward Phillip Hamlett Jr. (Martha) of Lynchburg. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Emily Mongold (Kevin), Casey Smith, Chelsea Smith, Noah Hamlett (Abbey), and Christian Hamlett; and two great-grandchildren, Charleigh Smith and Knox Yslas. Last but not least, her most precious protector, her Dachshund, Heidi. She is predeceased by her loving husband of 42 years, Edward (Eddie) Phillip Hamlett Sr.; her son-in-law, Wayne Smith; three brothers, Joseph Preston Dowdy Jr., John Lewis Dowdy, and Clarence Dowdy; and two sisters, Adele Crews and Frances Gibson.

Rachel took immense joy in being a loving wife, mother and grandmother, cherishing every moment spent nurturing and guiding her family with kindness and grace. After graduating from William Campbell High School, Rachel spent 36 dedicated years with Nationwide Insurance until Eddie retired and lovingly wanted her to join him in making more memories together. She was an incredible artist and enjoyed painting and writing poetry in her free time. The family is lucky enough that she was able to leave so many of her paintings and poems for them to cherish for a lifetime. In her later years, she poured her heart into volunteering with “The Good-Timers,” helping to bring smiles and companionship to the elderly in nursing homes. She loved gathering with her friends for their weekly card games, sharing laughter and fellowship with one another.

Rachel was a devout Christian who dedicated her life to serving her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was a member of Heritage Baptist Church for 34 years and attended faithfully until she was no longer able, due to health issues. At that time, she would regularly attend church services with her close friend, Becky, who would always come pick her up on Sunday so they could worship Jesus side by side. Rachel was a good and faithful servant to her Lord until the very end, and her family takes comfort knowing that she is now dancing in the streets of Heaven reunited with loved ones who have been waiting with open arms to welcome her home.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 6, 2025, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Chapel in Lynchburg. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at Tharp Funeral Chapel, Lynchburg, with Reverend Elizabeth Dowdy officiating. Interment will be held at Cumbie Cemetery in Rustburg, VA, following the service.

The family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers throughout this journey and would like to extend a special thank-you to her caregiver, Madisen, who showed Rachel nothing but love and compassion during her time of need.
