Rachel Louise (Murray) Phillips, affectionately known as "Mama Rachel", passed away peacefully on Friday May 17th, 2024 surrounded by her family. Born February 2, 1939, in Lamourie, Louisiana to the late Jake and Lucinda Murray, Sr. Rachel's life was a testament to kindness, warmth, and joy.
Mama Rachel was a beautiful soul known for her kindness, friendly spirit, and love for laughter. She radiated beauty in both heart and appearance. Always well-dressed and proud, she deeply believed in her character and shared her wisdom generously with anyone willing to listen. Always youthful at heart, Rachel was a joy to be around. She had a unique ability to relate to the young and old alike.
Rachel was known for her food. Her cooking, prepared with love, nourished many. She found joy in feeding her family and friends during holidays, delivering meals to those she cherished. Everyone knew, especially the kids, that you could get a snack at Mama Rachel's house. Rachel shared her love through food. Preparing all meals from scratch and never taking shortcuts because that's how it was always done. She also loved her arts and crafts. Crocheting blankets for her grandkids. Creating baskets and wreaths for any occasion. She also loved her plants, especially her ivies.
When her kids were younger, she was President PTA at Carter C. Raymond. Rachel dedicated 5 years to LSUA, 16 years Piccadilly and Pine Crest for 10 years. She worshipped at Beulah Baptist Church for 47 years, where she served as an Usher, Deaconess, and later Mother of the Church. At one point she was an Eastern Star. Rachel was also a faithful member at the Senior Citizen Center in LeCompte, LA. In recognition of her contribution to the community, she received a Proclamation on February 2nd 2019, declaring Rachel Louise Phillips Day, presented to her by former Mayor of LeCompte Craig Phillips on her 80th Birthday.
Mama Rachel was preceded in death by her parents Jake and Lucinda Murray, Husband Robert Lee Phillips Sr, Brother Bishop John A. Murray, Sister Diane Hayward, Sister Joyce Murray, Brother Cleveland Murray, Brother Willie L. Golden, Brother Matt Murray, Brother Jake Murray, Daughter Marilyn Phillips, Grandsons Stanley Williams Jr. And Quinntroy Davis, great grandson Tristan Bowie and great granddaughter Maryssa Mishey.
Mama Rachel's memory will be honored and kept alive by her surviving children; Robert Phillips Jr (J'Ethel), Carl Phillips Sr (Gloria), Carolyn Phillips King (Joseph), Cathy James (Edgar Sr), her God daughters Rachel Burgess and Shelia Dorty, sister in love Patrina Murray, her many grand and great grandchildren, and a large extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins of whom she loved.
Her legacy of love, kindness, and joy will forever be cherished by those who knew her. A mother to all, Mamma Rachel.
Please keep the Phillips Family in prayer.
