Evelyn Mitchell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Miller & Hill The Funeral Directors - Alexandria on Mar. 11, 2026.
The Life and Legacy of a Phenomenal Woman

Evelyn Williams was born on September 10, 1932, to the late Charles Williams and Frances Wheat. On March 3, 2026, she peacefully entered eternal rest.

Evelyn accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized by the late Rev. C. L. Roberts. She grew up in Bunkie, Louisiana, and later moved to Cheneyville, Louisiana alongside her siblings. She attended school in both towns, forming lifelong bonds with family, neighbors, and friends.

Evelyn dedicated much of her life to education and the care of children. She had a remarkable career as a teacher with C.C.N.C. Tick Tock Childcare Center, where she faithfully served for 45 years. She later worked with Westside Rehabilitation Center, where she served for five years.

A devoted woman of faith, Evelyn faithfully served her church as a doorkeeper and usher for many years until her health began to decline. She was deeply committed to encouraging children to live their best lives and to always do the right thing. She was admired for her wisdom, guidance, and loving kindness.

Evelyn was humble and generous, often feeding anyone who knocked at her door hungry and in need of a meal.

Evelyn was united in Holy Matrimony to James Mitchell of Washington, Louisiana, on October 28, 1967. To this union, seven children were born. Together they lovingly raised ten children and worked tirelessly to build a life centered around faith, family, and love.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Mitchell; her parents, Charles Williams Sr. and Frances Wheat Williams; her sisters, Genieve Harris, Shirley Harris, and Willie Mae Johnson; her brothers, Theodore Williams, Charles Williams Jr., and Archie Williams; and several of her children, Earl E. Coleman, Dorothy Reed, Kevin B. Coleman Sr., Kenneth W. Mitchell, Robert James Mitchell, and James Deal.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory her daughters: Viola Scott (Clevel) of Houston, Texas; Lois Coleman Mitchell; Brenda Mitchell; Francis Mitchell (Mike) of Cheneyville, Louisiana; and Doris Mitchell of Alexandria, Louisiana; one son, Bobby Ray Mitchell of Cheneyville, Louisiana; two sisters, Betty Thomas of Cheneyville, Louisiana and Katie Mae Smith of Houston, Texas.

She also leaves to cherish her memory 37 grandchildren, 81 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will continue to honor her life and legacy.
