Ralph Gibbs Obituary

Published by Legacy on Feb. 24, 2026.
Ralph "Sam" Gibbs, 74, of Benton, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at 9:05 a.m. at Select Specialty Care in Evansville, Indiana. He was surrounded by his loving family as he peacefully transitioned to his heavenly home.

Born on August 31, 1951, in Herrin, Illinois, Sam was the son of Carl Edward and Dolly (Branson) Gibbs. He spent his career as a dedicated truck driver, hauling countless loads across Southern Illinois and the United States. Sam embraced the open road, the stories it gave him, and the people he met along the way.

Sam lived life with a spark uniquely his own. He loved fishing, spinning a good story, tinkering with cars, and listening to Creedence Clearwater Revival. But nothing brought him more joy than "junking" collecting scrap metal and forgotten treasures and turning them into something new. His morning coffee and his beloved Mountain Dew were non-negotiable parts of his day, and friends knew to wait until he'd had both before striking up a conversation, unless they were prepared for his famously ornery side.

A true animal lover with a generous heart, Sam was always ready to help others without expecting anything in return. He built a life he was proud of which was simple, hardworking, and full of meaning, especially if it involved "junk". Among his most cherished memories were the many hauling trips he shared with his nephew, Carl Gibbs, adventures that became treasured stories for both of them. Though Sam is no longer here, the laughter, tales, and spirit he leaves behind will continue to echo through the lives of those who loved him.

Sam is survived by his son, Bill Gibbs (Jamie) of Johnston City; grandchildren Brayden, Aleeha, and Zane Gibbs; daughters Lisa (Todd) Ackerman of Providence Forge, Virginia, Teresa Mandell of Carterville, Pamela Holmes of Pittsburg, Tena (Todd) DePauw of Marion, and Theresa (Jason) Hampton of Benton. He is also survived by his sister in law, Shirley Gibbs of Johnston City; nephews Carl Gibbs (Chasidy) of Johnston City and Billy Darter of Herrin; nieces Billie Jo Thompson of Dongola, Mandy Smith of Pittsburg, and Judy Keeling of Herrin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sherry Ude; his brother, Billy Dean Gibbs; his sister, Barbara Darter; and his brother in law, William Darter.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Judy Holloway for her care, support, and kindness throughout Sam's illness.

"Put a candle in the window

'Cause I feel I've got to move

Though I'm going, going

I'll be coming home soon

Long as I can see the light"

We've got it from here, Sam!
