Ralph Heck Obituary

HECK, Ralph

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Papa, Ralph Heck, who slipped away peacefully in his sleep after a long battle with Myasthenia Gravis, an autoimmune disease. He was a gentle bear of a man, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that we, his three children, his beloved wife, his wonderful grandchildren, his sister, niece, and nephew, former wife, dear friends, and extended family, will hold onto forever. Ralph's life was filled with vibrant stories and experiences. He shared tales of his childhood adventures, from the garden he nurtured and the cakes he baked to his days working at the butcher shop with his family. He fondly recalled feeding a squirrel on his way to school and spending Saturdays at the movie theater. His playful spirit even led him to sing "Happy Birthday" in Mickey Mouse's voice throughout his life. Born to German immigrants, Ralph was the first in his family to attend college, at the University of Colorado, where he played football and majored in hotel management. He was drafted to play professionally, leading to a nine year career as linebacker for the Eagles, the Falcons, and the Giants. He later worked for Home Federal Savings Bank, becoming Vice President, before starting his own businesses. In retirement, he loved spending winters in Florida with his wife, Marilyn, and feeding the geese and ducks at the lake behind his house. A remarkable cook who rarely followed a recipe, he shared his culinary talents with family and community, inspiring his kids and grandkids to love cooking. Ralph had a playful side and loved to maintain an air of mystery. A steadfast friend, he stayed close to childhood and college friends his whole life. He was gentle and accepting, despite a seemingly gruff exterior. His sense of humor was legendary, with everyone possessing countless stories of his teasing wit and funny comments. His intelligence shone through his near-photographic memory and his deep love for history. He became an accomplished sailor and always loved being near or in the water. Ralph was not just our father; he was our anchor. He will be deeply loved and missed, forever etched in our hearts. Rest in peace, dear Ralph. Your legacy lives on in each of us. A celebration of Ralph's life will be held later this summer. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation: https://myasthenia.givevirtuous.org/donate
