Ralph Frank Schmidt
May 29, 1940 – August 29, 2025
- Ralph Frank Schmidt passed away peacefully at home on August 29, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 29, 1940, to Genevieve Rasmussen Schmidt and Frank Bull Schmidt.
Ralph grew up as the oldest child in a large family on a farm, where he learned the value of hard work and the rewards that come after a long growing season. He graduated from Jordan High School, served in the National Guard, and completed a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New Zealand. He later attended the College of Southern Utah and Brigham Young University, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Business Management.
On August 10, 1964, Ralph married the love of his life, Linda Jones, in the Logan Temple. Together they raised four children and created a life rich in love, adventure, and service. Their happiest moments were spent traveling, enjoying time at the family cabin, and being surrounded by their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Ralph began his career in accounting but soon realized he was happiest when working with his hands. He worked in construction, finishing drywall, the sugar factory, and eventually spent many years at General Electric. He retired at age 59, grateful for a career that allowed him to stay close to his family and roots in Utah.
Ralph found peace in his faith as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, drawing strength and guidance from its teachings throughout his life. He served faithfully in many church callings over the years, including financial clerk, scout leader, temple worker, and in various leadership roles. He and Linda also served a mission together in Salt Lake City.
Ralph found comfort in the quiet rhythm of working in his garden, where he nurtured not only vegetables but also a deep appreciation for nature. His garden was a source of joy and a gift he shared freely - giving away tomatoes, horseradish, pumpkins, and anything else he could grow. He was famous for his delicious pickles!
Ralph loved living a simple life - some might even say frugal. He was well known for his regular trips to DI and Goodwill, always on the lookout for books or treasures he thought his grandkids might like. Ralph touched many lives with his quiet strength, kindness, and the example he set. Whether he was making custom knives for his children and grandchildren who earned their Eagle Scout award, photographing every family event, helping grandkids with pottery for the county fair, or dropping off cornstalks in the fall, he showed his love through simple, thoughtful acts of service.
Ralph is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Genevieve Schmidt, and his brother, Blaine Schmidt and brother-in-law Tom Mellenthin. He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda, and their children: Jay Schmidt (Tami), LeAnn Warburton (Gregory), Brendon Schmidt (Stephanie), and Darren Schmidt (Camille). He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and his siblings: Marion Mellenthin, Dennis (Kathy), Doug (Janice), Allan (Colleen), Kent (Jan), and sister-in-law Cherie.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at 12:00 PM at the West Jordan Stake Center located at 2666 West 7000 South, West Jordan, Utah. Viewing will be held at the same location and day from 10:00 to 11:45AM.
