Ralph Schmidt Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Buchanan Funeral Home - Monett on Feb. 2, 2026.
Ralph Albert Schmidt, 80, was called into eternal rest on Friday, January 30, 2026, at his home in Monett, Missouri.

Ralph was born on August 5, 1945, in Verona, Missouri, to Albert and Flora (Pfitzner) Schmidt. He graduated from Monett High School in 1963. On November 18, 1972, he married Frances "Jeannie" Bertalotto, and together they shared more than 53 years of marriage.

Ralph proudly served six years in the National Guard and was honorably discharged. He spent many years working in road construction as an operating engineer before retiring, a career that reflected his deep sense of responsibility and workmanship. Known for his strong work ethic and long days, Ralph was often up before 4 a.m. to head to work, only to return home and continue working well into the late evenings and early mornings on the family farm. He was deeply connected to the roads he helped build and never missed an opportunity to point them out while driving, sharing stories of the work he had done and offering his own critiques along the way. A perfectionist at heart, Ralph held himself and his work to the highest standard. He was a longtime member of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 101.

An avid farmer with a big heart, Ralph devoted decades to caring for the family farm, seeing it not just as work but as a way of life. The same dedication he brought to his career showed up at home, in the land he tended and the people he helped. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and a respected man within his family, among his friends, in his community, and alongside those he worked with. Known by all as a one-of-a-kind man, Ralph was recognized for his firm handshake, quick wit, and love for farming, laughter, and colorful conversation. He was truly a legend.

Ralph is survived by his beloved wife, Jeannie; his three children, Stacy (Stephen) Bishop of Shell Knob, Missouri, Patrick (Amber Ferguson) Schmidt of Monett, Missouri, and Stephanie (Jason) Gunter of Olathe, Kansas; and his six grandchildren, Allyson "Carter," Camryn, and Adalyne "Cooper" Schmidt, and Emerson, Ophelia, and Bronson Bishop.

He is also survived by his brother, Leo (Janice) Schmidt; his sister, Marguerite (Bill) Butterworth; his sister-in-law, Joyce Tinklepaugh, all of Monett; along with numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Andrew, Joseph, and Carl Schmidt; and his sister, Mary Ann Jirik.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Future Farmers of America or St. Lawrence Catholic Church.

Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Buchanan Funeral Home of Monett.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 6, 2026, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Monett, with Father Rahab Isidor officiating.
