Ramon Chavez

Funeral Service for Ramon Gonzalez Chavez will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at Templo Betel with Rev. Ovidio Martinez, Sr. and Jr. Martinez. officiating. Viewing will be held from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at Brownfield Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 6:00 pm by Rev. Samuel Emiliano.

Ramon was born on July 2, 1937, to Atancio Chavez Hernandez and Monserrat Gonzalez Enriquez in Tacuba, Mexico. His grandfather introduced him to ranching when he was just 10 years old, and his passion for it flourished. At 17, he journeyed with a group of young men to the border, where he was chosen from hundreds of applicants. This marked the beginning of his American dream and the start of his many blessings.

On January 31, 1962, he married the love of his life, Socorro P. Chavez, often traveling by horse despite the challenges he encountered just to be with her. Soon after, they established their home in Tokio, TX, where they participated in and supported the congregation of Templo Sinai in Seagraves, TX. He served as a substitute preacher alongside his cherished wife, instructing couples and organizing meaningful Sunday devotionals.

Ramon epitomized the essence of the natural world, relishing in the simple delights of outdoor life. He shared a unique connection with his animals, which he cherished greatly. His enthusiasm for farming and ranching was evident. His hands were constantly engaged, whether caring for livestock or working the fields, symbolizing his commitment to his trade and his community. He was never unfamiliar with anyone and consistently put forth his utmost effort. He embodied the message of Colossians 3:23-24, which says, “Whatever you do, work wholeheartedly, as if you’re doing it for the Lord and not for people, knowing that from the Lord you will receive your inheritance as a reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”

Ramon is preceded in death by his wife, Socorro P. Chavez: daughter Socorrito Chavez; parents Atanacio Chavez Hernandez and Monserrat Gonzalez Enriquez; brothers, Federico “Chico” Antancio Baca and Atancio Gonzales; and sisters Fidala Chavez and Esther Chavez.

He is survived by his children, Leticia Chavez Guerra (Enrique) of Brownfield, TX, Dr. Noe Chavez of San Antonio, TX, Alvaro Chavez of Brownfield, TX, Paz-Zita Parra Marinelarena (Juan) of Lubbock, TX. He made a significant contribution to the upbringing of his grandchildren. His loving legacy continues with nine grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and three brothers and a sister.
