Ramona Davie Obituary

Ramona J. Davie, lovingly known as “Doe”, was the third child born to Nathaniel and Nell Cox on December 3, 1928. Even though she was one of nine siblings – and NOT the oldest – she was always the little mother to the six children who were born after her. Her mother, Nell, had difficulties that prevented her from being the mother that the children needed; therefore, Doe took the lead. Her father, Nathaniel, was a dedicated dad who worked very hard to provide but needed help with so many younger children who needed to be nurtured and loved. To help in this capacity, Doe dropped out of day high school and chose to enroll into night high school where she graduated.

One thing that every family member will tell you about Doe is that she mothered us all. She and her husband, Richard (also known as “Slick”) never had children of their own, but that didn’t mean she didn’t use her nurturing skills on the family. It was a Cox Tradition to go Grandpa’s (Nathaniel) house every Sunday to eat and fellowship. There would be 15-20 family members in his little 2-bedroom house where he’d cook wonderfully delicious cuisines, and Doe would stay to clean up after everyone! That was the mother in her.

Another great thing about Doe was that she loved the Lord and was filled with the Holy Ghost which she received in later years. Her sister, Dorothy, was a witness when Doe began to speak in tongues!

Doe was a hard worker outside the home, also. She, her sister, Maxine, and her sister, Dorothy, all worked at THE Ohio State University in many of the halls such as The Union, Raney Hall, Morrill Towers and Baker Hall. She and Dorothy also worked at those exciting OSU Football Games.

One fun fact: Back in the day, one of Doe’s favorite singers was Johnny Mathias. Her husband, Slick, had quite the collection of Johnny’s music and other smooth jazz selections. Johnny’s good looks and silky-smooth voice were obviously a winning combination!

Ramona is preceded in death by her husband, Richard; parents, Nathaniel and Nell Cox; brothers, Rudolph, Richard, Nathaniel, and Robert Cox; sisters, Maxine (Jesse) Allen, Angeline (George) Westbrook, and Betty Cox.

Left to cherish her memory is her beloved and devoted sister, Dorothy (Louis) Johnson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Her first cousin, Thelsia Scott, was able to have one last visit with Doe last summer. Her two special nieces are Veronica Houston and Vickie Allen. Veronica made it her mission to visit Aunt Doe weekly to paint her nails, give her lollipops and entertain her at Mother Angeline McCrory Manor in Columbus. Vickie had been Doe’s caretaker since 2010 and was totally devoted to her. She took care of ALL Doe’s needs. We as a family are profusely grateful and thank them both.
