Randall Mather Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers from Apr. 6 to Apr. 9, 2022.
The family of Randall Charles Mather will celebrate his life with a memorial service on Saturday, April 9th at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. We invite you to view the live-streamed service on this page, sign his virtual guestbook, and download his memorial keepsake folder to your device for printing. We also ask that you consider viewing his Life Tribute, a video of photographs set to his favorite music.

Randy was born February 15, 1940, to Velma and Rex Mather in Storm Lake, Iowa. He had many happy memories of growing up in such a beautiful place.

Randy was very involved in his school and community. As a paperboy, he earned a watch for his devotion to his first job. He was president of Storm Lake High School Student Body and played the trumpet for military funerals and was also a vocal soloist. He played trumpet in the Storm Lake High School Band on Friday nights and the Buena Vista University Band on Saturday afternoons.

His involvement in student government continued in college when he attended the University of Iowa where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree and became a Hawkeye. At the University he was a proud member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.

At Iowa, he was honored by the women of the university by being voted "most eligible bachelor" in the 1960 Leap Year and was chosen "Leap Year Lad".

At Iowa, he met his wife, Bonnie, and they were married for 60 years. They moved to Lubbock in 1962 when he became employed by Scientific Products a division of American Hospital Supply. He worked for Scientific Products for 32 years and then for LABSCO for the remainder of his career retiring at 75.

Randy was always involved with his children's activities by coaching soccer for his daughter, Wendy, being in Indian Guides and coaching with his son, Michael, and being a youth sponsor for both of their Christian Youth Fellowship groups.

He loved "Jeeping" in his 1979 CJ5 and annually went to Colorado to navigate the trails with his friends who fondly called him "Hawkeye".

Randy was preceded in death by his parents, Velma and Rex Mather. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie, daughter Wendy Pestrue (Justin) of Toledo, Ohio, and his son, Michael Mather (Christine) of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, and Brothers-in-law Jon Crouch (Jan) and Rand Crouch (Lauren).

In his memory donations to Meals on Wheels would be appreciated.

Randy was a kind and caring gentleman, a volunteer with Hospice of Lubbock, a licensed minister, and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. On June 2nd of 2021, Randy was diagnosed with advanced cancer. With his determination, wonderful doctors, and caregivers he was able to enjoy another Christmas, his 60th wedding anniversary, and his 82nd birthday. Randy passed away with his wife and children by his side the evening of Monday, April 4th, 2022.

Rest well precious Randy and "GO HAWKS"

I am just finding out about Randy's passing and I am sad to hear the news. I have such great memories of our relationship as I had the honor of working with him both at Scientific Products and Labsco and he was a true friend. I will miss his words of encouragement that he always had for me. Praying for Bonnie and the kids.
