Randy Wayne "Dog" Hiland, 67, of Burlington died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2025, at his home.
Born Dec. 3, 1957, in Joliet, Illinois, he was the son of Wayne and Sylvia Hiland.
He married Renee Sandy. She preceded him in death on Oct. 28, 2016.
Randy worked as a farm hand in his younger years. Later, he worked for Doug Fenton Roofing and Spikes Chain Link Fences.
He loved classic cars, hot rods, and motorcycles. He owned a Street Rat, a Barracuda, and many others. He enjoyed H.O. model trains, model airplanes, and was very artistic in painting the train scenes. He had many aquariums, and sometimes had so many they spanned his entire living room.
Dog was a long-time member of A.B.A.T.E. District 18 and, taking on the advice of his friend and neighbor Ed Scott, he was instrumental since the very beginning in planning, organizing, and fundraising for the Hospice Ride, which has grown every year, and other fundraising for various motorcycle poker runs and non-profit organizations.
Dog was the definition of a social butterfly! He knew no stranger and was well known throughout the area, always first with a bear hug, a smile, a wink, and a laugh. He will be truly missed.
He is survived by his daughter, Shannon (Ryan) O'Donnell; mother, Sylvia Hiland; three siblings, Ryan (Connie) Hiland, Debbie Bell, and Donna (Jon) Mille; several nieces and nephews; and his longtime friend, John Fageol.
He was preceded in death by his parents, the love of his life, his wife Renee Sandy, and brother Ron Hiland.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends.
The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at Lunning Chapel.
A memorial has been established for the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House, because even in death, he is still working on donations.
According to his wishes, cremation will be accorded following the funeral service and has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.
