Randy Hoenes Obituary

Randy Nelson Hoenes, 65, of Jackson, MI, passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2025, at home, surrounded by his family, after a hard fought one-year battle with cancer.
Randy was born on September 10, 1959, in Jackson to John and Teresa (Negus) Hoenes.
Randy graduated from Hanover Horton High School in 1977, where he played football and basketball. His love of all sports led him to become a registered official with the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) for over 30 years. He was also a member of the Jackson Area Officials Association (JAOA). He officiated football, basketball, and softball over the years, and some of his fondest memories were Friday night football games with "The Crew." He was especially proud of the opportunity to officiate at three MHSAA state football finals, in three different positions, head linesman, umpire and referee. He treasured the life-long friendships made among his fellow officials.
Randy was a corrections officer with the Michigan Department of Corrections, retiring after 27 years of service. After retirement he and his wife, Denise spent five years traveling the United States in their camper; enjoying life, seeing the sights, and meeting many interesting people along the way.
Randy was a huge University of Michigan fan and watching Michigan football games will not be the same without him. He also loved spending time on the golf course with friends and family and watching his grandchildren sporting events was always the best part of his day.
Randy is survived by his wife of 43 years, Denise; two children, daughter Amy Hoenes of Jackson, MI; son Randy (Missie) Hoenes Jr. of Dowagiac, MI; three grandchildren, Lauren Hoenes of Jackson, and Colton and Easton Hoenes of Dowagiac; one nephew, Ryan (Jennifer) Plank of Hanover, MI, and many dear friends that he considered family.
He was predeceased by his mother and stepfather, Teresa and Gene Crawford; father, John Hoenes, grandmother, Dorothy Negus, two sisters, Sandy Plank and Christy Hoenes.
According to his wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no formal services. He did, however, want his friends and family to gather and "Have a party".
The family will hold a Celebration of Life on Sunday, September 14, 2025, from 2:00-5:00 pm at Deer Run Golf Course, 3200 Hanover Rd, Horton, MI
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his honor can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project-https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org/

I talked Randy into working on a football crew with me and Tom Crampton. We end up working over 35 years together. We worked hard to get better as Officials. We laughed, argued and did a little name calling as we formed a bond with Jamie Sweeney, Randy Straub, Ed Earley and Don Bergstrom. Randy could be a little "hard headed" and knew he was always right. I worked a lot of basketball with Randy also. He was a great Official and an even better partner. I will miss our conversations, but cherish the memories of Big Red.

Worked with Randy at the big house, played a lot of softball with him, he could hit a ball so hard and out of sight. Randy was a ball of fun to be around. Randy is an outstanding human being, sorry to hear of his passing, prayers for his family. R.I.P. old friend.
