Ray Darnell Barefield Sr., 74, passed away peacefully at his home in Beeville, Texas on August 2, 2024.
Ray was born July 8, 1950, in Beeville to Nevy Robinson and Mary Lou Barefield. He was a graduate of A.C. Jones High School and married his sweetheart, Lena Elizabeth Johnson, on January 27, 1972, in Beeville.
Ray was a devoted member of Jones Chapel United Methodist Church and former director of the Beeville Men’s Chorus. He was known for his exceptional singing voice, which he shared with both the Lord and his community.
Ray devoted 37 years working at Beeville H-E-B earning the nickname “Mr. HEB.” He loved talking with people and was passionate about hunting, fishing and roping. Above all, he cherished his wife, Lena, their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Lena Barefield; his father, Nevy Robinson; his mother, Mary Lou Barefield; and two sisters.
Left to mourn his passing include his children, Ray (Jane) Barefield Jr., Clayton Johnson, Tanya Rae Barefield and Pamela (Kim) Mason; grandchildren, Tashina, Dessiree, Danielle, Trevion, Malachi, Gemineye, Justin and Jazzmine; four great-grandchildren, Synarea, Jeremiah, Aiden and Layla; sister, Esther Barefield; brother, Nevy Lee “Jesse” Robinson; special family friend, Day Malone; and many, many lifelong friends.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, August 8, at Galloway & Sons Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at 1:30 p.m. at St. Rose Cemetery. Rev. Oliver Greer will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Pamela Mason, Charles Bess, Charleston Bess Jr., Dashawn Robinson, JJ Robinson, Phillip Taylor, Jeremiah Reece, David Dominguez and Rhea “Rebo” Mayberry.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Barefield Jr., Clayton Johnson, Charleston Bess Sr., Nevy Lee “Jesse” Robinson, Craig Jefferson and Fred Moron.
Attendees are invited to join the Barefield family in partaking in a meal and celebrating the wonderful life of Ray D. Barefield Sr. following the graveside service at Jones Chapel Methodist Church, 115 N. Leverman St., Beeville, Texas 78102.
