Ray Marcus Blanton

Ray Marcus Blanton, a beloved member of the Sylva, NC community, passed away on December 10, 2023, at the age of 84. Born on January 9, 1939, in his beloved hometown, Ray's vibrant spirit and zest for life touched the hearts of all who knew him.

Ray was a man of many passions and adventures. He found solace and joy in exploring the breathtaking beauty of the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains through his beloved hikes. For over two decades, he formed cherished memories with the "Round Top" fellowship group, who shared his love for nature and the great outdoors.

A true wanderer at heart, Ray had a wanderlust that led him to explore the furthest corners of the world. Among his favorite destinations was the picturesque landscape of Alaska, where he found solace in the vastness of nature's wonders.

Ray left an indelible mark on his community. He was employed at the Mead Corporation for over a decade and was a skilled contractor for over 40 years. He dedicated himself to his craft, pouring his expertise into crafting custom homes and even building his own residences. A pioneer in the industry, Ray's commitment to excellence earned him the admiration and respect of all who saw his work.

When he wasn't constructing homes, Ray indulged in his other passions. Whether it was embarking on thrilling 4-wheeling adventures, enjoying the company of his McDonald's breakfast club buddies, or spending time outdoors mowing grass, Ray found joy in every moment. As a NASCAR fan, he not only cheered for his favorite drivers but also raced cars himself, channeling his competitive spirit into the exhilarating world of motorsports.

Ray had a deep connection to the natural world and found solace in the tranquility of fly fishing in Big Cove. With every cast, he felt a sense of peace and connection to the world around him.

Above all else, Ray cherished his family. He was a loving and devoted husband to his beloved spouse, Doralee Blanton, and a proud and supportive father to his children. Ray's love for his family was boundless, and he treasured every moment spent with them.  

He is preceded in death by his siblings, Vester Guy Blanton, Jr. and Wanda Blanton Phillips.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Doralee Smith Blanton, children: Ray M. Blanton, Jr. (Carla) of Springfield, TN, Michael L. Blanton of Taylorsville, NC, and Robin Bellah (Robert) of Charleston, SC. Grandchildren: Michael, Marcus, Kelly, Jamie, Trey and Cody, step grandchild: Kimberly. Great grandchildren: Addison, Brantley, Corbin, Lukasey and Olive. Brother: Kenneth Blanton (Elaine) of Weaverville, NC.

To celebrate Ray's remarkable life and legacy services will be held in North Carolina.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at The Appalachian Funeral Services and Crematorium, 165 Skyland Drive, Sylva, NC  28779.  The funeral service will follow.  Burial at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, 524 Old Settlement Road, Sylva, NC  28779.

As we bid farewell to Ray Marcus Blanton, we reflect on a life well-lived, filled with adventure, love, and joy. His memory will forever be etched in the hearts of all who knew him.
