Ray Crabtree Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Iles Dunn’s Funeral Home on Jan. 26, 2026.
Ray Stephens Crabtree, age 90, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Saturday, January 24, 2026.

Ray was born on August 19, 1935, in Kansas City, Missouri, to George and Harriet Crabtree. He was raised in Burlington, Iowa, and graduated from high school there. Ray enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, where he met and married, Sandra, who was also serving in the Army. They were married for 69 years.

Ray later attended the University of Iowa and, following graduation, settled in Des Moines with Sandra and their three sons. He began his career with Bankers Life, now Principal Financial Group, where he worked for 40 years before retiring.

Ray will be remembered for his steady presence, quiet strength, and deep devotion to his family. He was a kind and generous man whose integrity, humility, and strong work ethic guided his life.

Ray is survived by his wife, Sandra; his sons, Stephen (Cathie) of Renton, Washington, David (Mary Sue) of Des Moines, and Michael (Rebecca) of West Des Moines; his grandchildren, Emily (Brian Rudy), Evey, Andrew, and Jonathon (Kristen Giudicessi); and his great-grandchildren, Cameron and Mia. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Harriet Crabtree, and his brother, Frank Crabtree.

In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your favorite charity in the spirit of Ray's own generosity.
