Ray Edward Stipes

Ray Edward Stipes, of Saint Peters, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 17, 2025, at the age of 97.  He was the beloved husband of the late Norma Lee Stipes, his devoted wife of 62 years; cherished son of the late Kellis and Pearl Stipes; loving father of Stephen (Shelley) Stipes, Kelly Stipes-Ruprecht, and Lisa (Daniel) Dooley; proud grandfather of Meredith (Geoffrey) Engelmeyer, Elliott (Lindsey) Stipes, Nathalie (Ryan) Ozbun, Jordan (Mabel) Stipes, Kristina Jackson, and Kyle (Danielle) Jackson; and treasured great-grandfather to 21 great-grandchildren.

Ray lived a remarkable life of service and devotion to family. He proudly served his country in three branches of the U.S. military, first in the Navy during World War II, then in the Army Air Corps, and later as a charter member of the newly formed U.S. Air Force.  He received honorable discharges from each branch and carried his deep love for America throughout his life.  Following his military service, Ray worked with integrity and dedication for General Motors in St. Louis, where he retired after 30 years. Known for his strong work ethic, he was admired by friends, coworkers, and neighbors alike.

Ray and Norma shared a deep love for one another and their family.  Together they explored the country, traveling by car to countless destinations and visiting landmarks across the United States. After Norma passed in 2012 he would say often, “I miss her every day.”  Ray also enjoyed gardening and yard work and could name many plants by sight. He spent many hours working in the yard and teaching his children and grandchildren to appreciate the beauty and wonder of nature.  He also enjoyed woodworking and refinishing furniture to perfection.  He was an avid reader, with an insatiable curiosity and a sharp mind, able to finish a thick book in just a few days. He loved learning about history, nature, and the world around him. Ray also loved a good conversation and could talk with anyone about politics, people, or anything to do with cars—subjects he followed with both knowledge and enthusiasm. Ray had a wonderful sense of humor, often teasing and playfully challenging his family and friends with his quick wit.  He enjoyed sharing stories about his life, especially his childhood and growing up during the Great Depression in West Frankfort.  He often returned to his hometown to visit family and reconnect with his roots. In later years, he found great joy in time spent with family in St. Charles, where he and Norma made their home since the mid-1960s. He especially enjoyed watching Cardinal Baseball games every season.

Ray was a man of quiet strength, deep love, and unwavering loyalty. He was dearly loved and will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Memorial contributions may be made in Ray’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
