Ray S. Tolan, a very talented metal sculptor, fine wood worker and artist, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2025, at his Chapel Hill home, after a long illness. Born May 3, 1957, Ray’s creative spirit and dedication to his craft brought beauty into the lives of many.

Ray’s artistic talents were matched by his diverse interests. He was an avid cook, gardener and music lover, known for his ability to bring joy and life to any gathering through his culinary skills and gregarious spirit. Ray loved to create, whether it was through the sculpting of metal pieces that echoed his unique vision or through the intricate woodworking that captured the warmth of fine craftsmanship.

A beloved husband, father and grandfather, Ray is survived by his wife, Theresa Naomi (nee Writz) Tolan, his two sons, Luca Salvadore Tolan and his wife Claire, and Patrick Dylan Tolan and his wife Leah and granddaughter, Molly Florence Tolan.

Ray was known for his close knit family ties, which included his siblings, William Frost Tolan Jr. and his wife Rebecca, Susan Gale Tolan, Greg Tolan and his long time partner, Sue Mullin Unks, Robin Tolan Hearley and husband Mike, and Natalie Tolan Butler and husband Jaime. He was also uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, William Frost Sr. and Susan Shirley Tolan (nee Spencer).

The family wishes to express special thanks to Jacob Writz and Amedisys Home Health Care, particularly Julissa Cabrera Harrison, CNA; Kathleen Roose, RN; Elaine Husar, RN; Charles Rainey, Chaplain; and Cecelia Nwosu, SW, for their compassionate care and support during Ray’s final days.
