Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ideal Funeral Parlor - Florence on Feb. 6, 2026.
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Mr. Rayfield Gordon, 85 of Effingham transitioned on Thursday, February 5, 2026.

Mr. Rayfield (Sonny) Gordon, son of the late John and Jannie Bristol Gordon, was born on July 4, 1940, in Florence County, South Carolina. He departed this life on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at his home.

Rayfield, affectionately known as Sonny, was educated in the public schools of Florence County. He was formerly employed for several years with Charles Ingram Lumber Company until his health declined.

At an early age, Rayfield joined Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. Later in life, he became a member of Grace Tabernacle Ministries Baptist Church.

On June 18, 1966, Rayfield was united in holy matrimony to Mary Lee Green Gordon.

Sonny will be lovingly remembered for his deep love for his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Mary Lee Gordon, Sonny was preceded in death by three brothers, Jessis Gordon, Avant Gordon, and Bennie Gordon, and two sisters, Louise Gordon Leak and ReVirginia Gordon Johnson.

Those left to cherish his memory and who played a very special part in his life include: one sister, Mary (LB) Green of Bridgeport, CT; nephews Carl (Sandra) Gordon of Florence, Cameron Gordon of Effingham, and Richard (Effidell) Gordon of Effingham; nieces Linda Williams and Delores Tindal, both of Florence; and a special cousin, Valerie Cusack of Florence.

He is also survived by six sisters-in-law, Dorothy Vaughan of Effingham; Lueberta Green of Florence, SC; Brenda Green of Columbia, SC; Miriam F. Howard of Sumter, SC; Susan (Marvin) Douglas of West Columbia, SC; two brothers-in-law, Robert C. Green of Queens, NY, and Ernest R. Howard of Florence, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this time of loss and remembrance.
