Raymond G. Fick

Raymond G. Fick, a beloved husband, devoted father, and cherished friend, passed away on June 30, 2025, in Bay City, Michigan, at the age of 90. Born on June 12, 1935, in Bay City, Ray's vibrant spirit and deep love for his family and community left an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Ray dedicated 32 years of his working life to General Motors Powertrain in Bay City, where he retired as a job setter. His commitment and skill reflected his strong work ethic, which was evident since his early years. Ray's talent in athletics emerged during his grade school days, and he went on to be a standout athlete at T.L. Handy High School, excelling in both baseball and football. He proudly played baseball for the American Legion, where he achieved the impressive feat of pitching a no-hitter.

In 1954, Ray enlisted in the U.S. Army, where his athletic prowess shone through once again. Just one day after enlisting, he was invited to try out at Tiger Stadium, showcasing his remarkable pitching ability to School Boy Rowe. After serving his country, Ray continued to impress on the field, boasting two consecutive no-hitters and earning the title of the Army’s outstanding athlete in Okinawa. His football skills also garnered him recognition; he served as captain of his team, which allowed him the honor of shaking hands with a 4 star general during a coin toss. Unfortunately, an injury cut his playing career short, but it was during this time that he met the love of his life.

Ray married Susanne (Appold) Fick, with whom he shared 66 wonderful years. Together, they raised three sons—Raymond (Barbara) Fick, David (Sandra) Fick, and Gary (Debra Henning) Fick—including countless cherished moments. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, particularly Chelsea Fick, and step-grandchildren Caylee (Bryce) Moore, along with step-great-grandchildren Juniper and Bennett Moore. Ray also leaves behind his beloved sister, Gloria Kujawa, and brother, Cliff Fick, in-laws, Betty Fick and Joanne Fick.

Beyond his professional and personal life, Ray was a passionate sportsman. He played fast-pitch softball in Bay City from 1958 to 1972, where he earned accolades for his remarkable performance, including hitting 22 home runs in just 18 consecutive games. He also excelled as a coach, guiding his sons' Little League teams from 1967 to 1973, Pony League and Colt league in Bay City, and Connie Mack in Saginaw until 1985, where his teams achieved the honor of competing in the World Series in New Mexico, finishing a commendable second in the world.

Ray's love for sports did not end with baseball. An avid bowler, he achieved a perfect 300 game in 2006, and maintained an impressive average of 216, which included a record of 15 consecutive strikes. An enthusiastic golfer, he relished every chance to hit the links. His loyalty to his sports teams was unwavering; Ray was a dedicated fan of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings, and held University of Michigan season tickets for an incredible 37 years.

Ray is preceded in death by his parents Carl and Frieda (Draves) Fick; his siblings Earl, Irene, Clarence, Harvey, Gilbert and his furry friend Abigail whom he loved very much. His steadfast spirit, caring nature, and athletic accomplishments will be remembered by those who knew him, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. He will be deeply missed, but his vibrant memory will forever thrive in the hearts of his family and friends.

At Rays request cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will take place on Thursday, July 31, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. Officiating will be Rev. Philip Barewolf followed by Military Honor’s conducted by the Bay County Veterans Council and the U.S. Army.  The family will be present at the funeral home on Thursday to receive family and friends from 12:00 Noon until the time of services.
