A beautiful life came to a close on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at Memorial Health University Medical Center, Savannah, Georgia, when Bro. Raymond Harold Greene was called to eternal rest.
Raymond was born in
Waycross, Georgia, on September 17, 1952. He was the first of two children born to Mrs. Carene Williams Greene and the late Mr. Raymond Greene.
At a very early age, he became a member of Greater St. James A.M.E. Church in Blackshear, Georgia. Raymond truly enjoyed working in the church. Raymond grew up ushering in the church. Later, he served as a member of the Trustee Board, where he assisted with the upkeep of the church.
Raymond received his early education from Lee Street High and Elementary School. He was in the first, fully integrated graduation class of Blackshear High School in 1970. After completing high school, Raymond attended Savannah State University (formerly known as Savannah State College) where he received a degree in Business Administration. He joined the United States Navy and served from September 1976 to October 1984. He then attended Officer Candidate School (OCS), where he was commissioned as an Ensign and later promoted to Lieutenant. After leaving active duty, he served in the U.S. Navy Reserve from November 1984 to September 1998. Additionally, he joined the Naval Investigative Services (NIS) team as a Special Agent. The agency is now known as Naval Criminal Investigative Services (NCIS). While with NCIS, he served in numerous locations including Camp Lejune, Bahrain, the Seychelles, and Sicily, to name a few. Throughout his career he conducted criminal investigations, completed various assignments, provided force protection support for naval vessels making port visits, provided security training seminars for foreign nationals law enforcement officers and assisted USSS working Presidential details.
He was formerly married to Dr. Kim M. Greene of Mableton, Georgia. The Lord showered his blessings upon the couple giving them a wonderful son, Kyle Matthew McPherson Greene. Raymond was extremely proud of Kyle. He often talked about Kyle's many accomplishments and him fulfilling his dream to become a pilot. He was elated when Kyle upgraded to Captain for Delta Air Lines.
Raymond was a dedicated public servant. He served his country for over 30 years. He retired in 2009 and spent his remaining years caring for his mom, diligently tending his yards and grapevines, and perfecting his pitmaster skills for his family and friends.
His Christian upbringing led him to become affiliated with many organizations that worked towards the improvement of society. He was a member of the Consolidated Men's Club, the NAACP, and a huge supporter of the Lee Street Resource Center. Throughout these affiliations some friends affectionately called him "Mr. Pete," "Uncle Pete," "Uncle Raymond" or "Greene Man."
Raymond was a very serious man who cared deeply about others. In his own quiet and unceremonious way, he sought to help everyone. He mentored young people wherever he met them; helping them find and keep jobs, encouraging them, and showing them life skills to help them prepare for the future.
Raymond leaves precious memories to a devoted family including his mother, Mrs. Carene W. Greene, Blackshear, GA; son, Captain Kyle Matthew Greene (Kara), Austell, GA; granddaughter, Kapri Rosa Greene, Austell, GA; sister, Sharon LaKay (Kay) Greene, Duluth, GA; aunt, the late Mrs. Laurine W.
