Raymond Hess Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Palmer Funeral Homes-Hoven Chapel - Buchanan on Mar. 30, 2026.
Raymond E. Hess, known affectionately as Ray by his friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2026, in his hometown of South Bend, Indiana. Born on May 24, 1952, also in South Bend, Ray lived a full and vibrant life surrounded by the people he cherished and the activities that brought him joy.

Ray is survived by three sons, Zach Hess, Steve (Tina) Hess, and Scott (Carin) Hess; his stepdaughter, Stacie (Ernest) Jackson; and his sister, Jean (Dan) Gillis. He was preceded in death by his brother, Chuck Hess, and his granddaughter Angela Hess. Ray's legacy continues through his beloved grandchildren, Danielle and Jarod Hess, as well as Makenna and Grace Cole, Delaney (Kyle) Pozsgai and two great-grandchildren who brought him immense pride and happiness.

A wise and loving man, Ray's passion for life was evident in everything he did. He was an all-star high school football player as a Buchanan Buck, donning the number 45. Ray played on both sides of the ball as a fullback and defensive end. His passion for football extended into being a lifelong fan of the University of Michigan, never missing a game and always ready to cheer on his favorite team. Ray's continuous competitive spirit shone brightly in his love for bowling and golf, sports in which he not only played but also forged lasting friendships and memorable experiences. He was the General Manager at Chippewa Bowl in South Bend for over 20 years and coached in the youth program as well as for Riley High School. In his free time, he looked forward to playing rounds of golf with his sons.

Ray's enthusiasm for movies was well-known among his family and friends. He was particularly fond of the Star Wars saga and the timeless romance "Somewhere In Time." His knowledge of films was extensive, and he enjoyed the experience of attending the theater for a showing. He also had a love for music, whether listening with family and friends or attending shows. His favorite bands were the Moody Blues and Blood, Sweat, and Tears.

Ray enjoyed vacationing with his family, visiting childhood locations such as South Haven and Silver Lake in Michigan. During summertime he also loved to visit Clear Lake in Buchanan, a beach he had fond memories of as a child. Along with enjoying time by the water, Ray had an enduring fascination for sharks and was a Shark Week aficionado.

The memory of Raymond E. Hess will be cherished and kept alive through the countless stories he leaves behind and the people whose lives he touched. He was a beacon of love and wisdom, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.

In keeping with Ray's wishes, cremation will be taking place. Celebration of life services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Buchanan on 132 S. Oak Street from 2 PM to 4 PM on April 12th. Palmer Funeral Home- Hoven Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
