Raymond Eugene Payne, 89, of Burlington, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2025.
Born in Burlington on February 19, 1936, Raymond was a lifelong resident of Alamance County. He graduated from Williams High School in 1955 and went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Marine Corps until 1961.
After his military service, Raymond joined the family business, Payne Oil, and dedicated more than six decades to the company's growth and service. As president of Payne Oil, he led the company with pride and steady leadership. As part of his work at Payne Oil, Raymond founded Raygo Marts, further contributing to his lasting impact on the Burlington and Snow Camp communities.
In 1964, he married the love of his life, Shannon Hynes Payne, and together they built a life rooted in family, faith, work, and community.
Raymond was known for his integrity, work ethic, and strategic thinking, as well as his storytelling. He was deeply devoted to his family, his business, and the people around him - especially the employees, vendors, and customers of Payne Oil, whom he considered an extension of his family.
He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Shannon Hynes Payne; his daughter, Tracy Payne Boyd and her husband, David Harley Boyd; and his cherished grandsons, Jack Rierson Boyd and Payne Harley Boyd. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom delighted him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Marcelia Ingle Payne and William Ollie Payne; his brothers, William Ralph Payne, Richard Calvin Payne, and James Franklin Payne; and his sister, Edith Elizabeth Payne Conklin.
Visitation will be held at Rich and Thompson in Burlington on Thursday, May 1 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
