Raymond Wilson of Broomfield passed away on Aug. 5, 2025, at the age of 86. He was born Dec. 13, 1938, in Longmont to Francis and Ruth Wilson.
Raymond was born into one of the founding pioneer families of Erie. His grandfather, James Wilson, came to Erie from Rochester, New York, in the early 1880s, built many early houses and the Methodist church on Holbrook Street, started the first fire company, and served several times as mayor. His father, Francis Wilson, ran the first gas station in Erie, farmed, and also served multiple terms as mayor.
Raymond attended Lincoln School, now Erie Town Hall, where his aunt Stella, Francis's sister, was his teacher. After graduating from Erie High School in 1956, he joined the Army, serving in Korea in 1961, and became a reservist in 1962. Back in Denver, he worked in insurance and married his wife, Dianna Nevergall of Lima, Ohio, in 1963.
In 1967, he began work at the Denver Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment District as an operator, earned an associate degree in wastewater technology in 1976, and retired as a supervisor in 1988.
He thoroughly enjoyed Greyhound dog racing, creating a personal archive of nationwide dog racing results. He was also a devoted Denver Broncos fan and an avid trout fisherman at several Front Range reservoirs. He traveled with his family throughout the American West and Canada in the 1970s and 1980s, and was known for his refined, witty, and wry sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard (1988) and James (2000), and by his wife in 2024. He is survived by his son, Scott.
