Rebecca Mentzel Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Midlothian Funeral Home on Jan. 25, 2025.
Rebecca Ann Mentzel, beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2024, at the age of 65. Born on August 12, 1958, in Dallas, Texas, Rebecca was the cherished daughter of Roy Dean Prather and Mary Ellis Sundell Prather. She grew up in Oak Cliff, Texas, where she cultivated a deep sense of community and formed lifelong friendships.
Rebecca graduated from Kimball High School, where she was an active member of the ROTC program, demonstrating her leadership and dedication. She continued her education at El Centro Junior College, earning a nursing degree that set the foundation for a career devoted to caring for others.
Rebecca married the love of her life, Billy Joe Mentzel, on July 21, 1979. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her family, as she was known for her kindness and generosity within her community.
Rebecca found joy in simple pleasures. She was an avid reader and treasured her luncheons with friends, Pam Duffey, Maria Rivera, Kathleen Parmenter, and Frances McGinnis, where her vibrant personality and warm heart shone brightly. Her gentle nature and compassionate soul left an indelible mark on everyone she met. The first to arrive, she was described as the glue that held them together.
She is survived by her loving son, James Marshall Mentzel, and her devoted sisters, Penny Tinsley, Diana Wright, and Laurie Munson. Rebecca's legacy of love, kindness, and devotion to family and friends will continue to inspire those who were fortunate to know her.
Her laughter filled every room she entered, she kept a smile on her face to cheer up those around her. Rebecca was unafraid to begin conversations with anyone around her, from the grocery store to the doctor's office. She maintained the motto to get a "full belly laugh" at least once a day to help better her health, words that she would suggest to everyone she spoke with.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to a charity of your choice.
Rebecca Ann Mentzel will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
